Maybe it’s the electrician?” Unfortunately, what follows often isn’t pleasant. Instead of a friendly chat, you’re met with a pre-recorded pitch, dead air, or a salesperson trying to sell you something you didn’t ask for. After enduring this cycle several times, I made a pivotal choice: I would only answer calls from familiar numbers.

Effective Remedies for Unwanted Calls

For great evils, great remedies. This decision emerged from years of frustration with incessant and unsolicited calls. Despite being registered on the Robinson list and signing up for the Stop Advertising initiative, the calls didn’t stop. The trouble is, lists like these, despite their intent, aren’t foolproof. Companies don’t always adhere to them, either because they fail to check or deliberately bypass the rules.

Legislative Measures Against Spam

But there is already legislation against spam. Regulations do exist, and there are even prefixes to alert you to potential spam. Established schedules are also in place for when these calls can legally happen. Nevertheless, despite these laws, unwanted calls persist; companies find loopholes to exploit, including outsourcing to foreign entities where local laws don’t apply.

Consumer Responsibility and Authorizations

Consumers often inadvertently contribute to the issue by authorizing such calls at some point, often via small print agreements we gloss over. Yes, you could spend hours navigating through various service settings—like I did with Vodafone—to deactivate these options, but who genuinely has that time?

Deactivating that option in Vodafone, the telecom company of which I am a customer

Call Bombardment and Security Concerns

Is it just a single unwanted call? It may seem trivial. However, when you are bombarded with calls from various companies in a short span, it becomes a genuine nuisance. Often, one company may employ multiple representatives to contact you multiple times about the same offer. What’s even more alarming? A simple “yes” response could be recorded and misused to sign you up for services you never agreed to, as warned by authorities.

Adopting Technology to Combat Spam

Some may argue that refusing to answer unknown numbers is overkill. What about essential calls from doctors or service providers? Fortunately, technology comes to the rescue. Android has built-in call filters, and iPhone users can benefit from the live voicemail feature available in iOS 26. With this, your phone prompts the caller to explain their purpose, allowing you to gauge if it’s worth your time.

The Real Solution

Whenever an unknown number calls, I let the voicemail take the lead. Common spammers rarely leave messages, while legitimate callers usually do. If I recognize their importance—a delivery person, for example—I can always return the call when it’s deemed necessary.

Ultimately, balancing convenience and privacy boils down to choice. If the unknown number is from someone important, they will find a way to reach you. Avoid the unnecessary headache—don’t answer calls from unknown numbers.

General News – 2

The Rationale Behind Ignoring Unknown Calls The phone rings, and there’s a fleeting moment of intrigue: “Who could it be?
