These fees mirror those enforced in 2025, as the Government has opted to freeze them for this year while negotiations continue with self-employed organizations and social agents. The goal is to implement a system where contributions reflect the actual income of self-employed individuals.

Introducing a New Contribution System

The new contribution system, which was agreed upon with major self-employed organizations, began in early 2023 and is intended to evolve over a nine-year transition period that will conclude in 2032. It consists of 15 installment tranches designed to progressively adjust contributions based on individual income levels. For 2024, these contributions ranged from 225 to 530 euros, and for 2025, they ranged between 200 and 590 euros—the same amounts applicable for 2026.

Adjustable Contributions

Self-employed individuals have the flexibility to change their payment tranche every two months, allowing for up to six changes throughout the year. This adjustment helps them better align their contributions with any variations in income due to seasonal fluctuations or changes in professional activity.

Calculating Net Income

Net income for self-employed workers is calculated by deducting all necessary business expenses from gross income. Additionally, a general expense deduction of 7% (and 3% for corporate self-employed individuals) is applied to determine the contribution base and corresponding fees.

Mandatory Income Tax Returns

With the introduction of this new contribution scheme, any individual registered as self-employed—even for just one day—must now file a mandatory Income Tax return. Previously, this obligation only applied to those with more than 1,000 euros in net income from the previous year.

Fee Structure by Income Sections

For the upcoming year, the monthly contribution fees for a self-employed person at the minimum base with net returns between 670 euros and 1,700 euros will fall between 200 and 294 euros, depending on their selected income bracket. This covers the first six sections of the new fee structure.

For self-employed individuals earning higher net returns (starting at 1,700 euros), the fees will range from 350 to 590 euros. Specifically, those with net incomes between 3,620 euros and 4,050 euros per month will contribute 490 euros monthly. Those earning more than 6,000 euros will see their monthly contribution increase to 590 euros, a rise of 60 euros compared to 2024 and 90 euros since 2023.

Intergenerational Equity Mechanism (MEI)

Beginning January 1, 2026, the contribution for the Intergenerational Equity Mechanism (MEI)—a fund aimed at supporting pensions—will also see an increase. The MEI contribution will rise to 0.9%, up from 0.8% in the previous year. This adjustment impacts both self-employed and salaried workers, regardless of their income level.

General News – 2

Monthly Contributions for Self-Employed Workers in 2026 Self-employed workers contributing at the minimum base will pay monthly contributions to Social Security in 2026 that range from 200 to 590 euros, depending on their net income.
