Situated at one of Spain’s busiest traffic junctions, this mega-construction aims to create a green oasis without causing significant disruption to daily commuters. This undertaking presents a unique set of technical challenges, particularly the need to maintain fluid traffic flow while simultaneously advancing construction.

Night Operations: A Necessity

Building a towering 197-meter structure supported by 128 pillars on the M-30 is no small feat. As highlighted by Javier Nájera, the head of the City Council’s structures service, attempting to carry out this work during the day could result in gridlocks of up to 14 hours. To tackle this, most critical operations will occur during summer, a time when traffic intensity diminishes by 40%. Additionally, nocturnal operations allow for less disruption, as they complete the day’s work before rush hour begins the following morning.

Complex Technical Requirements

Utilizing cranes weighing over 500 tons, the assembly of these machines alone takes about four hours. Their primary function is to lift massive concrete beams, weighing up to 200 tons and stretching 40 meters long. The construction requires a total of 96 beams, and by 6 AM on workdays, everything must be cleared away to minimize traffic impact.

Logistical Hurdles

The enormous beams necessary for the project come from factories located in Rivas Vaciamadrid and Seville. Each beam’s production necessitates the complete shutdown of an industrial plant due to the sheer scale of the manufacturing process. While transporting them from Andalusia is pricier, the feasibility of producing them in a sole factory to meet urgent demands is simply unmanageable.

Unexpected Challenges

Initial excavation revealed inevitable complications, including unexpected pools of water that complicated geotechnical studies. Each day of delay carries heavy implications, particularly in this highly trafficked area. The tight construction timeline is further accentuated by unforeseen incidents, like accidents that delayed the project’s kick-off.

A Greener Future: Preparing for 1,060 Trees

Once the structural framework is in place, the platform will support over 110,000 tons and is designed to bear the weight of tanks. For the park’s future ecosystem, a triple-layer waterproofing system will ensure that 1,060 trees flourish, thanks to aeration cells that promote healthy root development. This technique was previously successful in other projects like Madrid Río.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="The bridge with the largest steel span has completed its most difficult challenge. This corridor will enhance connectivity for over 140,000 residents, integrating the Quinta de la Fuente del Berro park with the Ciudad Lineal green area.

Current Progress and Future Plans

As of now, the M-30 has regained operational lanes ahead of schedule. Traffic disruptions are currently limited to nighttime hours, but speed restrictions remain in place. With 73 piles installed and the first transverse beams placed, the project, backed by an investment of 78.9 million euros, is slated for completion by spring 2027.

Looking Ahead

Following the construction of the main structure, plans for garden areas, playgrounds, and communal spaces will take shape. The vision for Sales Park embodies a harmonious blend of urban development and natural beauty, promising significant ecological and recreational benefits for the community.

General News – 2

The Challenge of Building Sales Park in Madrid The construction of Sales Park in Madrid is an ambitious project spanning over 16,000 square meters.
