Introducing the Miura 5<\/h2>\n

With you, the Miura 5.<\/strong> The first complete unit of the Miura 5 is uniquely designed\u2014not for flight but for rigorous testing. Named QM1<\/a> (Qualification Model 1), this model has been meticulously assembled to facilitate the integration testing of all subsystems before the final flight model takes off into Earth orbit next year.<\/p>\n

This rocket represents the first orbital launcher developed by a Spanish company, following the successful launch of the Miura 1 suborbital rocket from Huelva in October 2023. This significant achievement has enabled PLD Space to complete its rocket development in record time\u2014outpacing all other European companies.<\/p>\n

Importance of the Miura 5<\/h2>\n

Why it is important.<\/strong> In a climate where sovereign access to space is increasingly viewed as a geopolitical issue, Europe must bolster its aerospace industry. The Miura 5 promises to deliver rockets that are not only more efficient but also more cost-effective than the current offerings like Ariane 6 and Vega C developed by ESA.<\/p>\n

The Miura 5 is innovating in the European New Space sector with its powerful TEPREL-C biokerosene and liquid oxygen engines, which are designed and manufactured in-house at PLD Space’s facility in Elche. Standing at 35.7 meters, the rocket consists of two stages\u2014the first featuring five engines, with the second stage equipped with an engine modified for vacuum conditions.<\/p>\n

Next Steps for PLD Space<\/h2>\n

The next steps.<\/strong> The first stage of the QM1 will undertake a full propellant loading test, commonly known as a “wet dress rehearsal.” During this process, the rocket’s tanks will be filled, and the vehicle will be pressurized as if preparing for an actual flight, simulating the structural and thermal loads expected at launch without firing the engines.<\/p>\n

The second stage will make its way to the United States to undergo testing for the Flight Termination System (FTS). This phase will involve deliberately destroying the rocket to ensure that the explosive charges can safely dismantle it in case of an in-flight anomaly.<\/p>\n

PLD Space anticipates having the second qualification unit ready by December. The first Miura 5 designed for flight is expected shortly after and is scheduled to head to French Guiana in the first quarter of 2026.<\/p>\n
