In 2021, the airport Olbia Costa Smeralda<\/a> in Sardinia underwent significant runway expansion to accommodate long-distance flights, paving the way for international airlines and enhancing the island’s appeal to global tourists. However, the inauguration of this expansion was marked by a unique event.<\/p>\n

According to Luxury Launches<\/a>, the ceremony was notably graced by the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who made his entrance not by unveiling a plaque or cutting a ribbon, but by landing his enormous private jet. This daring act signified a bold step into the future for the airport.<\/p>\n

A Private Jet So Large It Reshaped Airport Category<\/h2>\n

During the summer of 2021, the construction at Olbia airport was finalized. In a bid to escape the sweltering heat of Doha, the emir decided to retreat to the Mediterranean for leisure. With little hesitation, he summoned his entourage and embarked on his private jet to Sardinia.<\/p>\n

The aircraft in question is a Boeing 747-8, one of the largest airplanes worldwide. The Qatar Amiri Flight, the emir\u2019s designated airline, operates this luxury jet, valued at approximately 370 million euros. Its impressive dimensions stand at 76 meters in length, more than 68 meters in wingspan, and almost 450 tons at takeoff.<\/p>\n

Before the expansion, Olbia airport had already established itself as a key transit point, serving around 1.8 million passengers in 2008, primarily with domestic flights and select European destinations.<\/p>\n

Infrastructure Enhancements<\/h3>\n

The airport\u2019s new infrastructure included a runway extension of about 300 meters, bringing it to a total of 2,740 meters in length. Additionally, safety zones were increased, and the taxiway was refurbished, improving aircraft approach and departure efficiency. The runway was theoretically equipped to handle aircraft as substantial as the emir’s private jet.<\/p>\n

However, it is worth noting that this newly expanded runway had not undergone any testing pre-inauguration and was not officially approved for landings of such large aircraft. But these minor details did not deter the emir.<\/p>\n

Official Certification by a VIP Arrival<\/h2>\n

With the lack of scheduled long-distance international flights at Olbia, airport authorities seized the opportunity presented by the emir’s visit to officially verify their capability to accommodate large aircraft, including the Boeing 747 and others like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A330. If the emir’s multi-ton aircraft could land, it offered an open invitation to international tourists as well.<\/p>\n

Thanks to this event, conducted without any incidents, it was confirmed that the runway\u2019s length and surface were indeed suitable for such operations. Following this successful landing, Olbia airport introduced its first direct flights to Los Angeles, China, and Singapore in November of the same year, as reported by The New Sardegna<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Emir\u2019s Interests in Sardinia<\/h2>\n

Though the operation had been executed with all due precautions, landing the first large aircraft on a fresh runway inherently involved risks. The Emir’s personal interest in enabling international flights stems largely from his deep ties to the luxury hospitality sector on the Emerald Coast, controlled by Emerald Holding<\/a>, a company entirely owned by the Qatar Investment Authority.<\/p>\n

This venture includes several five-star hotels that attract an elite clientele, making it understandable that the emir would advocate for increased international flight access to the runway, allowing wealthy travelers to arrive in luxurious comfort.<\/p>\n

As discussed in a recent feature by Xataka, the emir has demonstrated an inclination to spend lavishly on exclusive vacations, reaffirming his commitment to making Sardinia a prime destination for affluent visitors.<\/p>\n
