But here it was easy. Pahr-Iversen is considered an important artist, with a solid name on the Norwegian art scene. He spent the summer of 1969 painting one wall at Rimbareid junior high school in Fitjar municipality in Sunnhordland. During the renovation of the school in 2013, a white wall was seen in front of the entire painting. No one has seen it since. Before now. New spring in Fantasiens hage Local zealots have been fighting for a long time to get the Fantasiens hage mural back on display, and in the end they got permission and a cost limit of NOK 41,000 from the municipality. But the condition behind the wall was worse than they had thought. Several decades in close contact with students, dust and a heat pump on the floor above had left ugly marks. TRACE: The wall was full of spills, shoe marks and stains when the wall was removed. Many yellow parts had also become discolored. Photo: Eli Bjelland \/ news The artists Bj\u00f8rg Str\u00f8mme and Bernt Olaf Nesb\u00f8 have spent the entire autumn holiday washing and fixing the colors in the picture. – I started junior high school here when it was new, and I think it was a tough and great image. It is absolutely appalling that such a work of art should be hidden behind a wall, says Nesb\u00f8. – It was a bit of trial and error, but I managed. I am very satisfied, says Str\u00f8mme, who worked at the school when the picture was new. RUBBING THE PICTURE: Bernt Olaf Nesb\u00f8 and Bj\u00f8rg Str\u00f8mme used the autumn holidays to repair the picture. Photo: Eli Bjelland \/ news Kjell Pahr-Iversen is grateful for the work they have done. – I am relieved and happy that they took the trouble to retrieve it. I hope and think it was worth it, says Pahr-Iversen, who on Saturday made the trip to Fitjar to see the newly renovated picture. – It was nice to look back into my world in the 60s. He lives in Stavanger, where he still creates art in his studio. IN THE STUDIO: 85-year-old Kjell Pahr-Iversen is considered an important artist. Photo: Anders Haualand \/ news \u2013 The municipality has a responsibility for art It took several more political rounds in Fitjar before money was allowed to repair the painting. KORO has previously stated that many works of art that need maintenance, supervision and restoration are within tight municipal budgets. There is still a big difference between the municipalities, they clarify. Mayor Harald Rydland (KrF) is happy that the wall painting at Rimbareid school is back in the light. He believes the price tag ends at around NOK 30,000. – There are many important things I can spend the money on. But I believe that we as a municipality have a responsibility to take care of valuable art by recognized artists. This work of art has national value, he believes. The price tag for Fantasiens hage in 1969 was NOK 30,000. In today’s value, it is around NOK 325,000, according to Statistics Norway.
