Once a stunning waterfall, it now flows with pollution—an unsightly mix of sludge, ashes, and heavy metals. What should be a celebration of nature’s wonder has turned into a distress signal.

Why Are Rains No Longer Welcome?

Despite 2025 being a year of excessive rainfall—surpassing that of 2024 by a noteworthy margin—this deluge has not brought the relief one might expect. In fact, current water levels are a slight 0.30% drop compared to last year. In particular, the western region of the country, rich in reservoirs, has faced intensive rainfall but is still left vulnerable.

As César Rodríguez Ballesteros pointed out, the current rain has not been a blessing. With the aftermath of devastating wildfires burning over 382,000 hectares (a staggering 800% increase compared to 2024), the situation is dire.

The Consequences of Intense Rainfall

Erosion: A Stealthy Enemy

When intense rainfall strikes burned land, erosion becomes a primary concern. Without vegetation to hold the soil in place, topsoil is washed away. This not only affects soil fertility but also leads to sediment buildup in flooding zones.

Water Pollution: A Lethal Combination

The fallout from these rains also leads to increased water pollution. Ash and soot infiltrate rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, compounding the problem with toxic substances like nitrates and phosphorus. This creates an environment ripe for eutrophication, which can devastate aquatic ecosystems and compromise water quality.

A Crisis That Could Have Been Averted

While preventative measures exist—such as soil restoration projects and erosion control systems—very few have been implemented. This inaction has left communities vulnerable to the consequences of severe rainfall after wildfire season.

A Looming Threat: Water Supply

The result is an increasingly precarious situation. With the current state of our water supply, particularly in the western regions, we must confront the reality that rainfall, once a source of hope, has become a bearer of bad news.

In essence, climate change is not merely a distant threat; it has made wildfires on the Peninsula 40 times more likely this summer. As fires become more prevalent, even a reduction in the number of wildfires will not mitigate the ensuing dangers posed by rainfall on burned land.

Preparing for the Future

As we adjust to enduring the consequences of these natural disasters, preparation and proactive measures will be critical. We have to be vigilant to safeguard our natural resources and ecosystems against, what has now become, the double-edged sword of excessive rainfall post-wildfire.

The upcoming challenges demand our attention and commitment to meaningful actions that address not just the symptoms but the underlying causes of these increasingly severe weather patterns.

General News – 2

The Dark Side of Rainfall: A Broken Cycle A few days ago, Paco Castañares shared a shocking video of the Las Nogaledas Gorge in the Jerte Valley.
