The \u00a0Circuit of the Americas\u00a0 had proven to be a fortunate venue for \u00a0Carlos Sainz\u00a0 since his debut in the Formula 1 World Championship in 2015. In fact, in his nine previous appearances driving for Toro Rosso, Renault, McLaren, and Ferrari, the Madrid-born driver consistently finished in the points whenever he completed a race, including his last two podiums with the \u00a0Scuderia\u00a0 (2023, 2024). However, this streak came to an abrupt halt with \u00a0Williams\u00a0, following an incident involving \u00a0Andrea Kimi Antonelli\u00a0, resulting in a subsequent five-place grid penalty for the \u00a0Mexican Grand Prix\u00a0.<\/p>\n

Race stewards identified Sainz as the “main responsible” party in the collision with the Mercedes driver, thus imposing the “corresponding penalty.” The official statement, authored by stewards \u00a0Felix Holter\u00a0, \u00a0Matthew Selley\u00a0, \u00a0Enrique Bernoldi\u00a0, and \u00a0Steve Pence\u00a0, clarified: “Since the penalized driver did not finish the race, a grid penalty equivalent to a 10-second sanction is imposed.” According to the judges, Sainz was never alongside or ahead of Antonelli’s mirror, and thus, per regulations, he had no claim for space at the corner’s apex. This argument aligns with standard FIA documentation but contradicted Sainz’s interpretation, who had executed a similar maneuver on \u00a0Oliver Bearman\u00a0 just moments earlier.<\/p>\n

“From Outside, It Seems My Fault”<\/h2>\n

“I know that from the outside it looks like it\u2019s my fault,” Sainz admitted in the mixed zone in Austin, preparing to elaborate further. “I accept that I locked up the tire and caused the incident. But if, when I made that same overtaking maneuver on Bearman, I wasn\u2019t shut out like he was doing to me, I think both of us share a bit of blame,” he reasoned.<\/p>\n

This lamentable chapter for Sainz came after he had achieved a podium finish in the \u00a0sprint race\u00a0 just a day earlier and received a visit from \u00a0Isabel D\u00edaz Ayuso\u00a0, president of the Community of Madrid, hours before the main event. During her time at the Circuit of the Americas, the leader from the \u00a0People’s Party\u00a0 visited Williams’ garage, where she was welcomed by the Spanish Grand Prix ambassador in Madrid.<\/p>\n

Following this penalty, Sainz\u2019s prospects became more complicated for the upcoming race at \u00a0Aut\u00f3dromo Hermanos Rodr\u00edguez\u00a0, where he had performed one of his career’s best showcases last year, claiming \u00a0pole\u00a0 and victory. In the first free practice session, Sainz will hand over the FW45\u2019s wheel to \u00a0Luke Browning\u00a0. This 23-year-old British driver is a member of Williams\u2019 academy and maintains his chances of becoming the \u00a0F2 champion\u00a0 in the final two championship rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n

Another casualty from Sunday\u2019s race was \u00a0Lewis Hamilton\u00a0, who finished fourth, just behind his teammate \u00a0Charles Leclerc\u00a0. In doing so, the seven-time champion became the driver with the most races in \u00a0Ferrari\u00a0‘s history without a podium (19), surpassing the previous record of \u00a0Didier Pironi\u00a0, who went 18 races without a podium between 1981 and 1982.<\/p>\n

This achievement adds to what has been a frustrating debut season for Hamilton with \u00a0Maranello\u00a0, as he never had the pace to finish in the top three. After his \u00a0pit stop\u00a0, he found himself in no man\u2019s land, unable to pressure \u00a0Lando Norris\u00a0 while the McLaren driver closed in on Leclerc. Additionally, during the race’s closing laps, Hamilton suffered some issues with his front-right tire, as he reported over the radio to his engineer \u00a0Riccardo Adami\u00a0.<\/p>\n

“I Must Keep Pushing”<\/h2>\n

The 10 points earned on Sunday, combined with the seven from the \u00a0sprint race\u00a0, allowed Lewis to set another record, becoming the only driver in history to surpass 5,000 points. He currently sits at 5,004.5 points, holding a comfortable lead over \u00a0Max Verstappen\u00a0 (3,329.5). Nevertheless, the Dutch driver snatched from Hamilton the honor of being the most victorious driver on American soil, achieving seven wins.<\/p>\n

“It was a good result for the team. I\u2019m happy to have finished ahead of a Mercedes and a McLaren. There are many positive conclusions. Naturally, I want to go further, so I must keep pushing,” concluded the former leader of the \u00a0Silver Arrows\u00a0. With these 36 points gained in Austin, \u00a0Scuderia\u00a0 maintains a solid third position in the Constructors’ Championship, fiercely battling against \u00a0Mercedes\u00a0 (341) and \u00a0Red Bull\u00a0 (331).<\/p>\n

From here on, Hamilton’s immediate priority will be to secure a podium at circuits that tend to favor him, such as \u00a0Mexico\u00a0 and \u00a0Interlagos\u00a0. Not forgetting \u00a0Las Vegas\u00a0, where Ferrari has shown strong performances in 2023 and 2024. Meanwhile, Leclerc aims for a victory to salvage his year, as the team led by \u00a0Fred Vasseur\u00a0 has yet to break its drought, matching the dismal records set in 2020 and 2021.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
