What did they find?<\/strong> Their surveillance efforts pinpointed a \u00a0tanker truck filling point\u00a0: a well that wasn\u2019t authorized for use, devoid of a volumetric counter or any measuring instruments. Determining the number of liters extracted from this well proved challenging.<\/p>\n

However, despite the company masquerading as legitimate, the Civil Guard documented that, over the past 18 months, \u00a056 million liters\u00a0 of water had been sold, amounting to a profit of at least \u00a0275,000 euros\u00a0.<\/p>\n

This statistic covers only the last 18 months; the armed institute suspects that the \u00a0illegal use\u00a0 of the well may have persisted for several decades.<\/p>\n

Just one case out of many.<\/strong> In recent years, numerous individuals have been investigated, arrested, and convicted for \u00a0illegal irrigation\u00a0. Just in 2023, hundreds of millions of cubic meters of water were extracted unlawfully. The issue is so pervasive that the \u00a0Malaga water company\u00a0 has even hired private detectives<\/a> to monitor employees, suppliers, and customers.<\/p>\n

However, the crux of the situation is not merely an account of past events; what\u2019s crucial is \u00a0what lies ahead\u00a0.<\/p>\n

The list of threats is vast.<\/strong> Climate change, aquifer overexploitation, intensive agriculture, poor water management, forest fires, \u00a0deforestation\u00a0, and population growth all contribute to Spain’s escalating \u00a0water crisis\u00a0. This issue is set to intensify, leading to a greater incidence of \u00a0theft\u00a0.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s a troubling reality: according to WWF<\/a>, there are more than \u00a0500,000 illegal wells\u00a0 operating in Spain.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s even more alarming is the financial motivation behind these actions combined with relatively low penalties. Most cases end<\/a> in fines, creating a \u00a0breeding ground\u00a0 for an immense problem.<\/p>\n
