So far this year, 82 cases of TBE virus have been reported in Norway, according to preliminary figures from FHI. – It indicates that the number of TBE virus cases continues to increase in Norway, says Helena Niemi Eide, doctor at the Department of Infection Control and Emergency Preparedness at the Institute of Public Health. INCREASING: It indicates that the number of TBE virus cases continues to increase in Norway, says Helena Niemi Eide, doctor at FHI. Before 2018, there were 6–12 cases per year. FHI believes that the reason for the increase is complex and influenced by, among other things, favorable climate conditions. There has also been an increase in Lyme disease in recent years. A little surprised Researchers have believed that the increase is also related to the pandemic, where more people have holidayed domestically. But despite a more normal summer, the infection trend continues in Telemark. Together with Vestfold and Agder, it forms the epicenter for cases of infection in the country. Around 25 people have become so ill that they were admitted to Telemark Hospital this year, compared to 20 patients last year. In addition, three have been for outpatient treatment. EKER: At Telemark Hospital, 28 people have been admitted to hospital or for outpatient treatment this year, four of whom were children, says Hilde Skudal, responsible for the tick study. Here together with the head of research at the hospital, Hege Kersten. Photo: VIGDIS HELLA / news It’s a little surprising, says Hilde Skudal, responsible for a tick study and research fellow at Telemark Hospital. – We heard the arguments that the lockdown affected people’s habits. The habits may have persisted. We see that people who have been infected have been to the cabin or volunteered. We don’t have a good explanation for why it’s like that, and we’re a little surprised, she says. They are collaborating with the hospitals in Vestfold, Sørlandet, the Flåttsenteret and Rikshospitalet on the first Norwegian study on TBE virus among Norwegian patients as a group. At Vestfold Hospital and Sørlandet Hospital, however, there have been fewer cases this year. There, respectively, seven and 10 people have been hospitalized with the TBE virus. Most are unvaccinated The vast majority of those who have been admitted to Telemark Hospital have been unvaccinated. – We see that some have started to be vaccinated, and several have taken the first dose. But to be fully vaccinated, you need three or four doses depending on your age and your own immune system, she explains. The vaccine against TBE virus is expensive and can cost many thousands of kroner for a family. – Many people cannot afford it because it is a rare disease. But for those affected, a vaccine would be beneficial. It prevents disease, says Skudal. Of the patients who are admitted, some recover after a couple of weeks. While others are still 100 per cent on sick leave after a year, even if they are in their 30s and 40s. Of those who become ill, around 30 per cent get an infection in the central nervous system such as the brain and meninges, says Skudal. – This is without a doubt a serious illness, she says. Assessing vaccine recommendations FHI recommends the TBE vaccine for children and adults who travel a lot in forests and fields, and who are often bitten by ticks in Agder, Vestfold, Telemark and the old Buskerud county. It is the Ministry of Health and Welfare that decides which vaccines are included in national vaccination programmes. Introduction of the TBE vaccine in the vaccination program was considered and rejected in 2019, after Østfold County Council requested it. The rationale was that the incidence of TBE in Norway is lower than the level WHO recommends for the introduction of a vaccine. A new assessment may become relevant if the incidence changes significantly. In that case, a financing scheme must also be considered, states FHI.

ttn-69

Last year was a record year nationally with over 70 people infected with the TBE virus.
