In 1934, the islands were connected by a breakwater, and Henningsv\u00e6r subsequently became a good port for the fishing fleet and was for a long time a dominant fishing village and fishing reception in Lofoten.  Fishing outside Henningsv\u00e6r has varied considerably over time;  at its peak, the site had about 60 fish receptions;  today only a couple or three are left.  Henningsv\u00e6r got a road connection to Austv\u00e5g\u00f8ya via a couple of smaller islands in 1983, and tourist traffic has steadily increased since then.  Today, tourism is an important business income for Henningsv\u00e6r, and the settlement has several hotels, rorbu facilities, restaurants and galleries.  The Codstock festival is organized annually, which is a big happening.  Henningsv\u00e6r is also one of Lofoten&#8217;s most important starting points for outdoor activities such as climbing in the area around V\u00e5gakallen north of the town.  The distance to the municipal center Svolv\u00e6r is 26 kilometers, and to the nearest airport, Svolv\u00e6r Airport, Helle, 31 kilometers.  At the first Norwegian census in 1769, Henningsv\u00e6r had a permanent settlement of just four people.
