We are in Hyttegata in Kongsberg. One year after the unthinkable happened. One year after the silver city saw five city children suddenly taken away. Hansson explains that the incident has been a backdrop for the entire city over the past year, but that he believes the city will rise up and remain as it was. – I actually think so. Basically like that, he explains. When the lights went out and the police barriers were removed, red hearts appeared in Hyttegata. Photo: Caroline Utti / news Commemoration: – I don’t know if I have found the right words On the first anniversary, there is a commemoration at Kongsberg. Local government minister Sigbjørn Gjelsvik will be there, among others. There will be music and poetry. It all ends with a free memorial concert in Kongsberg church. – There are very few residents of Kongsberg who do not think a little about what happened a year ago. 13 October 2021 will probably always be with us, says Mayor Kari Anne Sand. Kari Anne Sand is mayor of Kongsberg. Photo: Per Håkon Solberg / news She praises the residents of the municipality. Their ability to stand together, as well as to show generosity and care with each other. – I think it will be a nice memorial. We gather around five fire pans that symbolize that warmth and that light, and how the five killed shone for their surroundings, she explains. The mayor admits that it is difficult to find the right words for today’s memorial speech, but that it is not her who is at the center. – I don’t know if I have found the right words yet, she says. Praise the municipality and the police Back in Hyttegata we find Bent Hogstad. He lived here on 12 October 2021. Now he has moved. Bent Hogstad back in Hyttegata where he lived a year ago. Photo: Christine Breivik Øen / news – Things are starting to work out. Too many, he says. – Has the city been good at looking after each other? – Yes. The municipality has been very good and the police have been very good. They have been much more present here in the last year. He thinks most people in Kongsberg are doing well. – But it is clear, those who are directly affected, it is difficult for them. There are things that should not happen. Several left flowers, candles and teddy bears after the murders. Photo: Cicilie Sigrid Andersen / news – We should have still had them with us – It’s always just as strange to walk here. Over the past year, being here has become very different. That’s what Veslemøy Fjerdingstad tells us. She is back in Hyttegata. A street she herself has lived in in the past. Veslemøy Fjerdingstad has lived in Hyttegata herself. Photo: Per Håkon Solberg / news – I think of the people who are now dead, she explains. She knew them all, and admits that she had to spend some time managing to return here. – But that’s how it is with many. I know many people who think that now they are done with it, and then they get a “flashback” of it here, she says thoughtfully before adding: – These people. We should still have them with us. Important not to forget – I’m glad it’s a memorial. So that we don’t forget them, says Fjerdingstad. She says that she is happy that people use and have taken back Hyttegata. – Can Kongsberg get over this? – You probably won’t get over it, but you can move on anyway. – Have you in Kongsberg gotten well again? – Yes and no. Perpetrator sentenced to compulsory mental health care It was 13 October last year that Espen Andersen Bråthen killed five people in Kongsberg. The police received the first report of the crime at 18:13. The perpetrator was arrested at 18:47. Bråthen was charged with five knife murders and eleven attempted murders with a bow and arrow, in addition to a number of serious threats. On 24 June this year, Bråthen was sentenced to compulsory mental health care. It was in line with the claim of both the prosecutor and the defense. The sentence means that Bråthen will not serve time in prison, but will be treated by the healthcare system. After three years, he must be reassessed.

ttn-69

– It will always lie above the city.
