Somewhere on the riverbank these days stands a donation that most of all seems to belong approximately 380,000 kilometers away – on the moon. Close to the donning there is a suitcase-like device with a tube down into the river. – This has a water intake that sucks the water from the Drammenselva into the unit. Then we can filter a water sample and extract all the DNA in that sample, and use it to look for the organism instead of finding the organism itself, explains researcher at Niva, Anette Engesmo. She aims at the suitcase box. From left: Kofferten, Janne Øvrebø Bohnhorst and Anette Engesmo. Photo: Yasmin Mouafak Abokatmah / news No need to catch the fish Every year, millions of kroner are spent on monitoring and mapping Norwegian nature, to find out whether the dreaded salmon parasite is present in waterways. For example Gyrodactylus salaris. Now a new solution can make the job easier – and far cheaper. The case and the donning can be the key to the salmon parasite problem. The inside of the suitcase that finds DNA in the water. Photo: Yasmin Mouafak Abokatmah – In the past we have had to physically catch the fish to see if they have salmon parasites on them. Such traditional monitoring of Norwegian nature is a time-consuming process and costs almost NOK 400 million a year, says Janne Øvrebø Bohnhorst, section leader in the Norwegian Environment Agency. Soon, then, this way of finding parasites can hopefully be scrapped. The “suitcase” can be placed by a body of water over a two-week period before the samples have to be analyzed in a lab. The project is a collaboration between the Norwegian Environment Agency, DMR Environment and Geotechnics and DNASense apS. Photo: Yasmin Mouafak Abokatmah / news No need for expensive researchers But why not bring the lab itself down to the water too? This is where the donning comes into the picture. Poul Larsen, head of department at Danish environmental consultancy explains: – We can set it out, take the samples and analyze them completely automatically. Without people present. The result is sent up into the cloud, so that we can see which species are in the water. – The fact that everything can be in one place, without expensive researchers and technicians present, means that this is extremely economical both in terms of time and money, says Bohnhorst in the Norwegian Environment Agency. The fishermen are positive Øyvind Fjeldset, fishing consultant at the Norwegian Hunter and Fishermen’s Association, is happy about the project. Øyvind Fjeldseth of the Norwegian Hunter and Fishermen’s Association is positive about the project. Photo: Norwegian Hunters and Fishermen’s Association – We are clearly positive about this. It is an incredibly fascinating method that is being used. The better preparation, the greater security and better preparation for an action, he states. The new test solutions are still in the project stage on behalf of the Norwegian Environment Agency. However, they are clear about what the solutions will mean for them. – We have called it a small moon landing, concludes Janne Øvrebø Bohnhorst.
