OpenAI has published its first detailed study about what users really do and who they are, and the portrait breaks that intuition: most conversations do not relate to work. Instead, personal use dominates and grows.

The data reflect a notable change in the type of use of ChatGPT: by June 2025, 73% of the conversations were non-work-related, whereas in June 2024, the percentages were almost tied. Additionally, there are other compelling insights: the public is predominantly young, with approximately half of the messages sent by individuals between 18 and 25 years old. This trend is accompanied by a shift in the gender profile: earlier records showed a predominance of male users, but by 2025, 52% of users correspond to female names.

More than work: ChatGPT Shows Its Most Personal Face

The company classified more than one million conversations into seven major categories. The most common category, “practical orientation,” accounts for 28.3% of all interactions and includes help requests for daily tasks, academic consultations, or training tips. Interestingly, the study highlights that adoption of ChatGPT grows faster in less affluent countries, although it does not specify usage by country.

The second major category encompasses writing-related requests, which emphasize the editing or critique of texts and personal communication. Tasks related to programming account for only 4.2% of the analyzed chats. A growing trend within ChatGPT’s usage is the quest for information. OpenAI states that these types of inquiries have evolved into a close substitute for web search engines. Between May and June 2024, this usage grew steadily, until it became the second most common use of the platform.

This section also includes product inquiries, which account for 2.1% of the consultations. These data raise questions about the future of searches and how the company, led by Sam Altman, is challenging established giants like Google. Another crucial segment includes personal advice and intimate conversations. The report mentions that 1.9% of interactions relate to reflections and relationships, while 0.4% pertain to role-playing activities that involve using ChatGPT as a virtual “companion.” Although these figures may seem small, the topic has gained considerable attention in various countries due to the potential impact of this technology on individuals’ mental health.

reflections and relationships,

The study consists of 62 pages covering the period from May 2024 to June 2025, incorporating data from 1.5 million users and a sample of 1.1 million conversations. When it comes to how OpenAI acquired this information, the company states it employed its models to analyze messages while ensuring that human researchers did not read individual conversations, thereby preserving user privacy. Demographic information derives from the data users provide upon registration.

With the growing trend of ChatGPT evolving beyond its initial work-related use, it is crucial to note that this shift reflects broader changes in how technology interacts with our daily lives. As conversations become more varied and personal, tools like ChatGPT might redefine our understanding of communication and information-seeking.

Images | Solen Feyissa | Levart_photographer

In Xataka | China is selling us a future full of humanoid robots.
