The Spanish apneist Isabel S\u00e1nchez-Arran<\/strong> faces a significant challenge as she competes in the World Confederation World Cup in Underwater Activities (CMAS)<\/strong> 2025 in the stunning Greek city of Mytikas. This exhilarating event runs from this Friday until next Thursday, September 18, where she aims to achieve two new national records. With aspirations to dive deeper than ever, Isabel has set her sights on the “magical figure” of 100 meters, all while emphasizing that she feels no rush to reach that milestone.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview, the 41-year-old athlete stated, “The minimum with which I would be happy would be to make two national records. I would like to do 100 meters, but I am aware that it is a high departure. Lowering 100 meters from one year to another may be a lot or not because the difference in pressure between 90 and 100 is not so much. In terms of time, it extends enough.” As a member of the Spanish APNEA team, Isabel is competing alongside more than 120 athletes from 30 countries in what is labeled as a prestigious event on the international calendar. Her main goal is to surpass the daunting barrier of 100 meters deeper into the sea, a mark typically reserved for the elite in the sport.<\/p>\n

“It can go well or not. I am prepared for both things,” she candidly remarked. She explained, “If it does not go well this year, nothing happens. I can achieve it next year or whenever it’s meant to be. A new dozen is always a mental barrier. Last World Cup, I reached 90 meters with bialle. My plan is to dive 99 meters several times before attempting 100.” Enjoyment and the journey are key for Isabel: “I am enjoying this process a lot, and I don’t want to carry the anxiety of needing to achieve this. This sport is my passion, but it is also my job, so I take great care of myself,” she warned.<\/p>\n

To prepare for this World Cup, S\u00e1nchez-Arran concentrated in the Greek city of Kalamata alongside her training partner Fran Quesada and the Technical Delegate of the Spanish Federation of Underwater Activities (Fedas), Natalie Cabanas. This dedication paid off last year when she clinched a bronze medal at the same event, establishing herself as one of the sport’s leading figures while also setting two new national records.<\/p>\n

In this upcoming championship, Isabel plans to participate in all event modalities progressively, emphasizing her versatility as one of the most complete apneists internationally. The World Cup itself began on Friday, but her crucial competition days are set for September 10, 12, 15, and 17.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the allure of this sport, she stated, “The feeling of uncertainty prior to diving is addictive.” She openly shared her experience from last year’s World Cup, admitting, “I had a difficult time with my ear. I pushed myself too hard during the training, wanting to dive deep without considering my body’s limits. An experience that I learned from and worked on improving.” This reflection highlights her growth, as she focuses on reducing dive times to enhance her performance, particularly acknowledging the significance of pausing to breathe.<\/p>\n

This year, Isabel faced an unexpected hurdle as she suffered an ankle injury just before the competition. Yet resiliency remains crucial in this sport, where accepting the intrinsic risks is part of the journey. “It’s clear that there\u2019s always a rush of adrenaline when approaching new depths. Familiar depths feel manageable, but inherent risks exist because accidents are called accidents for a reason,” she commented.<\/p>\n

Unlike many athletes, S\u00e1nchez-Arran does not adhere to specific rituals or hobbies before a dive. Yet, she acknowledged that experiencing pre-dive nerves is common, stating, “It’s normal to feel nervous before a dive, driven by fears\u2014both physical and psychological.” She grasps the balance between the two types of fears, understanding that extensive training backs them up. Music, such as the poignant song ‘Oceans Wait,’ helps her gain perspective and focus before immersing herself into the depths.<\/p>\n

Finally, Isabel lauded the rising popularity of apnea as both a competitive and recreational practice in recent years. \u201cThe growth of interest is amazing. More and more clubs are emerging, and this year I even had a 14-year-old student, and last year, a 70-year-old learner,\u201d she concluded. This positive trend signifies not only the growth of the sport but also its accessibility, inviting people from all demographics to explore the beauty and thrill of diving into the vast underwater world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
