(Image: x/Zerocenseura)

Tragedy Strikes Port of the Selva: A Community in Mourning

The community of The Port of the Selva in Alt Empordà is grappling with profound grief following the shocking closure of ten bars and restaurants. This unfortunate turn of events has left more than a hundred employees without work, intensifying the local economic crisis during a peak tourist season.

The tragic series of events began on June 16, when José Andrés Bel, affectionately known as “Pepito,” lost his wife to suicide. Just over a month later, on July 29, Bel attempted to end his life and was subsequently hospitalized at Trueta Hospital in Girona. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries on August 20.

The Impact of Tragedy on Local Businesses

This heartbreaking incident has reverberated throughout the community. “The closure of all these establishments has been hard, especially because of the tragic circumstances that have surrounded them,” said Roger Pinart, the second deputy mayor, who also oversees finance and security.

For decades, José and his wife operated some of the most prominent establishments in the region, including the renowned Cafè de la Marina and Ca la Maria. Collectively, the couple managed to control 20% of the local gastronomic offerings, with additional venues in Llançà and Selva de Mar.

While their aggressive business model attracted many satisfied restaurant owners, it also fostered an environment of distrust among investors. Two years prior to the tragedy, many investors began to withdraw from the business landscape due to mounting concerns over rental pricing practices, which were described as exploitative.

The Consequences of Business Closures

The sudden death of Bel precipitated the unfortunate closure of the establishments on August 25, right in the midst of the high tourist season. “The establishments employed a dozen permanent workers, but during high season, the workforce swelled to around one hundred,” noted Pinart.

The uncertainty stemming from this closure has gripped employees—many of whom are local residents—and business owners, all of whom are now searching for alternative avenues to reactivate the local economy.

After Bel’s death, the Port Corball Society, which managed the restaurants, became partially owned by TQ-MR FAMILY II SL, a Girona-based company specializing in real estate. “Now there is a new partner who has 51% of the society and has indicated that he is working to reopen the premises as soon as possible,” explained Pinart.

Future Prospects for Employees and Community Recovery

While the closure has heavily impacted the community’s fabric, there’s a glimmer of hope. Initial discussions suggest that the new owners may be willing to revitalize some of the businesses. “This reassures us a bit” Pinart added, indicating that the potential reopening could alleviate some fears concerning local employment.

The City Council is focused on understanding how the restaurants can proceed and what will become of their employees. “We believe it will be a relatively fast process,” Pinart remarked.

Despite these tentative steps toward recovery, the image of vacant restaurants along the Maritime facade raises concerns about the potential long-term impacts on tourism in the Port of the Selva.

Amid the community’s grief and uncertainty, Pinart urged residents to refrain from rumors about the circumstances surrounding the deaths. “The Mossos d’Esquadra have not opened any investigation,” he clarified.

Recently, several trucks have begun to remove furniture and materials from the closed premises, signaling the potential for a new chapter as the municipality hopes to resolve the situation before the next tourism season.

The combined sadness of lost lives with the urgent need for economic recovery presents a unique challenge for the Port of the Selva community. However, the spirit of resilience and hope for renewed opportunity may yet prevail as local stakeholders unite to navigate these difficult waters together.

General News – 2

They close ten bars and restaurants after the suicide of their partner of owners in the Port of the Jungle, Girona.
