Also this year. When the Nobel Committee’s leader Berit Reiss-Andersen enters the lightning rain at the Nobel Institute at 11, the prize winner has probably already received a hint. The new thing this year is the war in Europe. It is difficult to imagine that the peace prize in 2022 does not address the attack on Ukraine and its consequences. But the facilities at such a price can be several. The war actualizes the struggle for democracy and human rights in eastern Europe, the danger of the use of nuclear weapons and people who have to flee. And it updates the work of the international courts. Between Anna. The Nobel year When the prize is now announced, it is the answer to a process that has included the Nobel Committee and experts from home and abroad for three quarters of a year. The deadline to nominate is before 1 February. After that, the committee’s own members can supplement the list, but only until the first committee meeting. No one who is then not on the list can receive the award. This last deadline therefore came a week after the attack on Ukraine. Members of parliament and government at home and abroad, former award winners, heads of state and a number of university people are among those who can nominate. Throughout the spring, the list of current award winners will be reduced from more than 300 nominees to just a handful of candidates. Several of the candidates on this so-called short list have been there for several years. It has not proven to be a disadvantage. Favorites in 2022 Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyj is favorite with the bookmakers. But it would be surprising if the committee gave the award to a head of state in an ongoing war. Despite the fact that he belongs to the attacked party. At the same time, the rules are such that his name had to be on the block only days after the invasion in order to be considered at all. More likely one of last year’s favourites. Svetlana Tikhanovskaja is one of the leading figures in the fight for democracy and human rights in Belarus. Svetlana Tikhanovskaja held up a picture of her husband, Sergej Tikhanovsky, who is in prison in Belarus. Photo: ROMAN VONDROUS \/ AFP In addition to the fight she is waging in Belarus, she has engaged forcefully against the war in neighboring Ukraine, and probably contributed to a strong public opinion against Belarus getting more actively involved. She could also consider sharing the prize, for example with dissidents in her home country or other activists and human rights defenders in the region. Updated Another price that would address the Ukraine war is the international courts. And the role they play in documenting, and subsequently persecuting, violated the rules of war. Both the Hague Court (ICJ), which deals with cases between states, and the International Criminal Court (ICC), which can also prosecute individuals, are relevant here. Here the challenge is probably more to find the right candidates. Japanese Hibakusha – survivors of the atomic bombs in Japan – and their supporters are a possibility, although they were strongly involved when the nuclear weapons activists in ICAN received the prize a few years ago. The refugee situation is also a possible topic for a peace prize, 100 years after Fridtjof Nansen received the peace prize. Then other topics can be thought of, for example the climate, but even that would be surprising in a year where war in Europe dominates the news picture. Speculation The speculation in advance is almost a ritual. It doesn’t just happen in Norway, but in the media around the world. The value of the speculation does not actually lie in whether someone manages to find the candidate before the announcement, but in the fact that these days there is a focus on meritorious peace work around the world. In 2020, the World Food Program (WFP) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its work against world hunger. Photo: Amer Almohibany \/ AFP And that even conflicts that often get marginal mention are often brought up. For the Nobel Committee, the value lies in the fact that the speculation helps to keep interest in the prize up. “Fifteen minutes of fame” Internationally, the announcement of the peace prize is Norway’s “fifteen minutes of fame”, with wide media coverage over large parts of the globe. Leaks are rare. Only the committee knows. For the most part, it is secret throughout the Nobel year, and it has become more secretive with the years. The whole thing will be rounded off with a celebration, ceremony and torchlight procession in Oslo on 10 December.
