This type of malware \u00a0cryptographically\u00a0 locks data, rendering it \u00a0unusable\u00a0 until the victim pays the ransom demanded by the attackers. Notable incidents include the attack on Telef\u00f3nica in 2017 and the recent hacking of Artists &#038; Clients, a platform where artists connect with potential customers. In this instance, hackers are not only seeking a ransom but also threatening to exploit all the artists&#8217; works for artificial intelligence (AI) purposes.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 1 --> <\/p>\n<p><strong>The Hacking Incident<\/strong> was detailed in a report by <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.404media.co\/hackers-threaten-to-submit-artists-data-to-ai-models-if-art-site-doesnt-pay-up\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>404Media<\/u><\/a>. The breach took place on August 30, when a message from the \u00a0attackers\u00a0 stated: &#8220;This website has been pirated by Lunalock. All its \u00a0data\u00a0, including email addresses and passwords of the user accounts, have been \u00a0stolen\u00a0 and \u00a0encrypted\u00a0.&#8221; Since then, the website has remained offline, and as of this writing, <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/artistsnclients.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>it remains inaccessible<\/u><\/a>. The owners of the website have yet to comment, and their social media platforms are silent. However, several artists on the platform <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/commissions\/comments\/1n496t0\/beware_psa_artistsclients_website_breach_anyone\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>voiced their concerns on Reddit<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 2 --><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-asset article-asset-normal article-asset-center\">\n<div class=\"desvio-container\">\n<div class=\"desvio\">\n<div class=\"desvio-figure js-desvio-figure\">\n<pre><code> &lt;img alt=\"I have negotiated with the Crackers in a ransomware attack: we asked us 1 bitcoin or we lost all our information\" width=\"375\" height=\"142\" src=\"https:\/\/i.blogs.es\/1b67e1\/portada\/375_142.jpeg\"\/&gt;<\/code><\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Escalating Threats<\/strong>. The hackers\u2019 message was typical for such attacks: if the ransom is not paid, all data would be leaked, including the site\u2019s source code and users&#8217; personal information. The most alarming part of the message stated: &#8220;We will send all the illustrations to artificial intelligence companies so that they are added to the training data sets.&#8221; In a statement to 404Media, a researcher at the Flare cybersecurity company noted, &#8220;It is the first time I see an attack using AI models as part of her extortion tactics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 3 -->  <\/p>\n<p><strong>AI and Art<\/strong> have become contentious topics ever since the \u00a0emergence\u00a0 of the first image generation models trained on artists&#8217; works without permission. Some artists have felt compelled to <u>sue companies<\/u> using their work, while others have devised methods to \u201c\u00a0poison\u00a0\u201d their work, making it unusable for AI. Additionally, applications have emerged that help prevent a particular work from being used in AI training. The current situation not only reflects the artists\u2019 anxieties but also serves as a \u00a0lever\u00a0 in the hackers&#8217; threats.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 4 --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Malicious Use of AI<\/strong>. Interestingly, while Lunalock is not using AI directly, they employ it as a tactic in their extortion strategy. Nevertheless, there are <u>cybercriminals<\/u> who actively use AI to enhance the effectiveness of their attacks, allowing for more automated and sophisticated operations.
