It has been designed for something simpler yet more ambitious: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.korea.kr\/briefing\/pressReleaseView.do?newsId=156445908&amp;utm_#:~:text=%EB%B2%88%EC%A7%B8%20%EC%BE%8C%EA%B1%B0%E2%80%9D%EB%9D%BC%EB%A9%B0%20%E2%80%9C-,%EC%9E%90%EC%A3%BC%EA%B5%AD%EB%B0%A9%EC%9D%98%20%EC%83%88%EB%A1%9C%EC%9A%B4%20%EC%8B%9C%EB%8C%80%EA%B0%80%20%EC%97%B4%EB%A0%B8%EB%8B%A4,-.%20%ED%95%AD%EA%B3%B5%EC%82%B0%EC%97%85%20EB%B0%9C%EC%A0%84%EC%9D%98%20%EC%97%AD%EC%82%ACEC%A0%9D%EC%9D%B8\" target=\"_blank\">that South Korea does not depend on anyone when needing a combat plane<\/a>. The country is called \u00a0Boramae\u00a0, or \u00a0Hugon Hunter\u00a0, and it aims to be the axis of its \u00a0Air defense until 2032\u00a0. It is not merely a new generation fighter; it is a \u00a0symbol\u00a0, and everything indicates that it will also signal its intent to neighbors.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 1 --><\/p>\n<p>When South Korea sought to access \u00a0F-35\u00a0 technologies to integrate them into their future aircraft, they faced a \u00a0resounding rejection\u00a0. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/koreajoongangdaily.joins.com\/2015\/09\/22\/politics\/US-denying-Seoul-key-fighter-jet-technologies\/3009537.html\" target=\"_blank\">The United States denied<\/a> the transfer of key systems, including Radar \u00a0Aesa\u00a0, the electro-optical aiming system (\u00a0EOTS\u00a0), IRS, and electronic warfare disturbance systems. This episode was decisive. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/south-korea-unveils-prototype-kf-x-fighter-jet-2021-04-09\" target=\"_blank\">Seoul realized<\/a> that if it wanted control, it would have to build from scratch. Thus, the \u00a0KF-21 was born\u00a0. Through this project, South Korea aims to mark a clear line: there can be no real sovereignty if the most sensitive technologies depend on third parties.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 2 --><\/p>\n<h2>The South Korean Jump Towards Autonomy in Defense<\/h2>\n<p>For Seoul, the KF-21 not only satisfies the desire for \u00a0industrial independence\u00a0 but also fulfills a \u00a0strategic need\u00a0. Tensions with North Korea are both cyclical and constant, while China continues to \u00a0rearm\u00a0. Meanwhile, Japan is already collaborating with the United Kingdom and Italy on the \u00a0GCAP\u00a0\u2014the future sixth-generation fighter projected to fly in 2035. South Korea does not want to be left behind. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.korea.kr\/news\/policyNewsView.do?newsId=148904147\" target=\"_blank\">According to DAPA, the agency overseeing the project<\/a>, the KF-21 is set to first replace the \u00a0F-4 and F-5\u00a0, and later the \u00a0F-16\u00a0. Having control over one&#8217;s own aircraft represents not only a defense strategy but also a means of geopolitical positioning.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 3 --><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.korea.kr\/briefing\/pressReleaseView.do?newsId=156445908&amp;utm#:~:text=%EC%B2%A8%EB%8B%A8%20%EC%B4%9C%EC%9D%8C%EC%86%8D%20%EC%A0%84%ED%88%AC%EA%B8%B0%20%EC%84%B8%EA%B3%84%208%EB%B2%88%EC%A7%B8%20%EC%BE%8C%EA%B1%B0\" target=\"_blank\">According to the government<\/a>, South Korea became the \u00a0eighth country\u00a0 to develop a supersonic fighter capable of conducting test flights. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2021\/04\/09\/south-korea-unveils-prototype-of-homegrown-kf-x-fighter-jet\/\" target=\"_blank\">The first prototype of the KF-21 was presented in April 2021<\/a>, and just three months later, on July 19, 2022, it completed its first flight from Sacheon base. Since then, all six planned prototypes are airborne and have surpassed key milestones, including the first \u00a0supersonic flight\u00a0 (January 2023) and real weapon tests with \u00a0meteor\u00a0 missiles (May 8, 2024) and \u00a0Iris-T\u00a0 systems (May 17, 2024) as confirmed by DAPA and \u00a0Diehl Defense\u00a0. Deliveries to the Air Force are slated to begin in \u00a02026\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 4 --><\/p>\n<p>One of the critical elements of the KF-21 is found within its structure. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hanwhasystems.com\/kr\/prcenter\/newsView.do?bbidx=558&amp;utm\" target=\"_blank\">The Aesa radar installed<\/a> is developed in South Korea by \u00a0Hanwha Systems\u00a0 and the \u00a0Defense Development Agency\u00a0. Much of the aircraft, including mission systems and sensors, are also domestically produced. According to \u00a0KAI\u00a0, the goal is to achieve a \u00a065% nationalization rate\u00a0 in serial production. While the engine is still sourced externally, many systems in the cabin and radar are proudly South Korean.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 5 --><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-asset-image article-asset-normal article-asset-center\">\n<div class=\"asset-content\">\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KF 21 3\" class=\"centro_sinmarco\" src=\"https:\/\/teknomers.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/His-proposal-is-called-KF-21-and-is-nearly-ready-for.jpeg\"\/>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Developing the KF-21 has not been cheap. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dapa.go.kr\/dapa\/na\/ntt\/selectNttInfo.do?bbsId=326&amp;menuId=678&amp;nttSn=55955#:~:text=%EA%B8%B0%EC%97%90%ED%95%A0%20%EA%B2%83%EC%9C%BC%EB%A1%9C%20%EA%B8%B0%EB%8C%80%EB%90%A9%EB%8B%88%EB%8B%A4.-,*%20%EC%82%AC%EC%97%85%EA%B8%B0%EA%B0%84%20%3A%20%E2%80%9915~%E2%80%9928%EB%85%85%2C%20%EC%B4%9D%EC%82%AC%EC%97%85%EB%B9%84%20%3A%20%EC%95%BD%208%EC%A1%B0%208%2C142%EC%96%B5%20%EC%9B%90,-%E2%96%A1%20%ED%95%B4%EC%83%81%EC%9E%91%EC%A0%84%ED%97%88%EA%B8%B0%2DII%20%EC%82%AC%EC%97%85%EC%9D%80\" target=\"_blank\">According to DAPA figures<\/a>, the initial development budget was set at \u00a08.8 billion Wons\u00a0, roughly \u00a05.4 billion euros\u00a0. This funding was structured with \u00a060%\u00a0 contributed by the government, \u00a020%\u00a0 from KAI and local industry partners, and an initial \u00a020%\u00a0 from Indonesia. South Korea has adopted a gradual strategy, focusing on achieving nationalization of components, and not seeking to obtain everything from the outset. They aim to control each phase of the process.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 6 --><\/p>\n<p>Indonesian participation has been a crucial part of the program, albeit unstable. Initially signed to finance \u00a020%\u00a0 of development, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/indonesia-security-southkorea\/south-korea-says-fighter-jet-deal-with-indonesia-is-on-track-despite-200-million-unpaid-idINKCN1MW0D0\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indonesia stopped payments<\/a> years later. After much back and forth, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/en\/indonesia-cut-contribution-south-korea-fighter-jet-project-2025-06-13\/\" target=\"_blank\">in 2025 a new framework was established<\/a>: Indonesia will contribute about \u00a0600,000 million Wons\u00a0, roughly \u00a0415 million euros\u00a0. This agreement ensures some technological transfers while maintaining access to production for the Indonesian Air Force. South Korea will assume the rest of the costs, indicating that the project continues to forge ahead, albeit not without challenges.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 7 --><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-asset-image article-asset-normal article-asset-center\">\n<div class=\"asset-content\">\n   <img class=\"centro_sinmarco\" height=\"584\" width=\"960\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/teknomers.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755458637_875_His-proposal-is-called-KF-21-and-is-nearly-ready-for.jpeg\" alt=\"KF 21 cover\"\/><br \/>\n   <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KF 21 cover\" class=\"centro_sinmarco\" src=\"https:\/\/teknomers.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755458637_875_His-proposal-is-called-KF-21-and-is-nearly-ready-for.jpeg\"\/>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The engine currently represents the primary external dependency of the KF-21. It uses the \u00a0General Electric F414\u00a0, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.navair.navy.mil\/product\/FA-18EF-Super-Hornet#:~:text=Propulsion%3A%20Two%20F414%2DGE%2D400%20turbofan%20engines.%2022%2C000%20pounds%20%289%2C977%20kg%29%20static%20thrust%20per%20engine\" target=\"_blank\">the same engine that powers the F\/A-18 Super Hornet<\/a>, and is assembled under license by \u00a0Hanwha Aerospace\u00a0 in South Korea. While this arrangement allows for some logistical control, any supply is still contingent upon \u00a0U.S. authorizations\u00a0. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kedglobal.com\/aerospace-defense\/newsView\/ked202407020008?utm\" target=\"_blank\">The South Korean industry is already developing its own engine<\/a>, but it is not expected to be ready before the next decade. Thus, any export of the KF-21 will remain under \u00a0ITAR regulations\u00a0 until domestically sourced engines and components become available.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 8 --><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-asset-image article-asset-normal article-asset-center\">\n<div class=\"asset-content\">\n   <img class=\"centro_sinmarco\" height=\"466\" width=\"699\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/teknomers.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755458637_605_His-proposal-is-called-KF-21-and-is-nearly-ready-for.jpeg\" alt=\"KF 21 2\"\/><br \/>\n   <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KF 21 2\" class=\"centro_sinmarco\" src=\"https:\/\/teknomers.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755458637_605_His-proposal-is-called-KF-21-and-is-nearly-ready-for.jpeg\"\/>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The KF-21 has also been designed with \u00a0export\u00a0 in mind. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/poland-buys-48-light-combat-aircraft-south-korea-2022-09-16\/\" target=\"_blank\">South Korea has demonstrated its capability to sell light fighters\u00a0, such as the \u00a0FA-50\u00a0. Now, it aims to capture a higher market segment with the KF-21. Potential clients include the \u00a0Philippines\u00a0 and \u00a0Poland\u00a0. Additionally, there\u2019s speculation about \u00a0Egypt\u00a0, although official confirmation is lacking. \u00a0The primary limitation\u00a0 remains the American seal on certain components until they can fully domesticize engines and other critical parts.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 9 --><\/p>\n<p>While the program remains on schedule, challenges persist. The first units to be delivered in 2026 will only be equipped for \u00a0Air-to-Air\u00a0 engagements, with \u00a0Air-to-Ground\u00a0 weapon integration planned for \u00a02027\u00a0, as confirmed by the \u00a0Acquisition Programs Council\u00a0. Additionally, the actual operating costs and field performance remain under evaluation. The South Korean Air Force will directly face these challenges and risks. Although the KF-21 has shown promise in its development, the ultimate test will be its performance in \u00a0daily operations\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 10 --><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-asset article-asset-normal article-asset-center\">\n<div class=\"desvio-container\">\n<div class=\"desvio\">\n<div class=\"desvio-figure js-desvio-figure\">\n    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A startup is building the largest plane in the world, and its plan challenges the entire industry\" width=\"375\" height=\"142\" src=\"https:\/\/teknomers.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755458637_825_His-proposal-is-called-KF-21-and-is-nearly-ready-for.jpeg\"\/>\n   <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Although it is not yet in service, the KF-21 has already made significant strides: it demonstrates that South Korea does not need to choose between being a mere \u00a0client or an outsider\u00a0. Rather, it can evolve into a serious \u00a0manufacturer\u00a0. The forthcoming phases\u2014exports, upgrades, and expanding capabilities\u2014will hinge on operational results and the prevailing international landscape.
