When rock’n’roll was considered a poison that destabilized youth , the songs abounded, often being qualified by parents and educators as obscene , even many that today sound harmless. But none reached the extreme of being investigated for two and a half years by an incomprehensible letter… In case the flies.

In 1963 , *Louie Louie*, a modest song performed by The Kingsmen , became one of the greatest successes in the history of pop music. It sold millions of copies, forming such a notorious phenomenon that it even caught the attention of the FBI . The reason? The lyrics were so confusing that it suggested they could include pernicious hidden messages .

The original trail of the song is long. Berry, in fact, had inspired a Cuban bolero titled *El Loco Cha-Cha*. The lyrics of Berry’s version talked about a sailor who sails back to Jamaica , where his girl awaits him. Its simplicity—featuring a single riff throughout the song—made Berry value it highly. Ironically, he sold the rights to Flip Records .

In this way, the song circulated as a repertoire piece, with groups like The Wailers versioning it before The Kingsmen. Interestingly, the singer of The Kingsmen, Jack Ely , had only heard the song once before on a jukebox . He caught the melody incorrectly, which resulted in The Kingsmen’s version being slightly different from all the above, receiving an air of counterpoint . When their manager saw that the band had spent an hour and a half in concert playing only that song, he decided that they had to record it urgently.

Due to this urgency, the band tried to recreate the sound of a live performance—hanging microphones from the ceiling and letting all instruments play simultaneously. The recording was fraught with issues: Ely wore orthodontics, making his voice difficult to understand. Additionally, the instrumentalists couldn’t hear Ely’s vocals, resulting in each musician playing their part independently. This led to the famous mistake at 1:57 when Ely anticipates his entrance after the single, and the drummer fills the gap with a double hit while the others continue, believing it to be correct, as there was no time for more takes.

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfrznnyqof0

The FBI arrives

The song’s success, which led to it selling a million copies in its first year, caught the attention of various parent associations and decency leagues who wanted to ban it due to its indecent content . However, no one was quite sure what the indecency consisted of, largely because the singer was hardly understood . Some imagined they could discern a faint “Fuck” murmured throughout the song.

The Governor of Indiana eventually prohibited its dissemination in 1964 for its “obscene content,” which only further fueled youth interest. The politician remarked that his ears “buzzed” upon listening to the song, effectively turning it into a demonic object . This ignited a moral panic and ultimately attracted the attention of the government.

The inquiries reached the FBI : cryptographers were hired to analyze every sound, and the singer was interrogated multiple times. Officially, the FBI claimed that the song was “incomprehensible at any speed.” In an effort to quell any controversy, the label that published the song included the full lyrics in Broadcasting Magazine , directed at industry professionals, to eliminate any possible doubts.

But things didn’t stop there. A letter from an enraged father, criticizing a song he found so obscene that it could not be replicated , caught the eye of Attorney General Robert Kennedy and the FBI Director, J. Edgar Hoover . The investigation reopened; they interviewed Richard Berry, The Kingsmen (curiously, Ely, who had left the band, was not interviewed), and the record staff. After two and a half years, the FBI concluded that the letter was too cryptic to allow for any interpretations, and thus it was not deemed obscene.

In 2005 , when *Louie Louie* had become an undeniable monument in rock history, the controversy flared again: the superintendent of a University of Michigan prohibited an orchestra from playing the song at a local march. Paranoid delusions among high educational positions persist.

Today, the song is regarded as an icon, its influence on contemporary rock immeasurable: over 4,000 versions of the theme have been counted, and it repeatedly appears in periodical lists of the best songs of all time . Nothing detrimental about being once forbidden by the FBI; it only enhanced its legacy.

General News – 2

It is very possible that there have been numerous songs in the history of pop that have deserved exhaustive monitoring by the FBI .
