What the government calls “ordinary people” could expect tax relief in the future. But Finance Minister Trygve Slagsvold Vedum has no plans to adjust the limit as Norwegians’ wages increase in the run-up to the next election. – We have set 750,000 as a target figure. When we have to set the priorities, that is the number we go by, says Vedum to news. Hundreds of thousands pass the border Since prices are rising uncomfortably quickly, Statistics Norway (SSB) expects that wages will have to increase by an unusually high percentage in the coming years. In practice, this means that hundreds of thousands of Norwegians who earned less than NOK 750,000 last year will be lifted over the limit in the coming years, according to income figures Statistics Norway has obtained for news. Wage growth is set to be so strong that everyone who earned over 645,000 last year will end up over the 750,000 limit before the general election in 2025. When Finance Minister Trygve Slagsvold Vedum presented the state budget for 2022, he said that 2 out of 3 Norwegians would not get a raise tax. The calculation is unlikely to be correct in a few years because the incomes of people run from the tax limit of 750,000. Photo: Annika Byrde / NTB Vedum now talks about income from 300,000 as “ordinary”: – The most important thing is to finance pensions, safety and defence, the basic preparedness. But we believe that especially for those who earn 300,000, 400,000, 500,000, regular income, then the price increase hits extra hard. Then it is important that they do not get a higher tax bill, that it goes in the other direction, that they get a lower tax bill, he says. – But was it meant that there would be fewer “ordinary people” with that limit? – No, people are people no matter what taxes you pay. There are many good people who earn 2.5 million as well. They also exist, so it’s not like there are different types of people. But in terms of taxation, we believe that priority should be given to ordinary and medium incomes, says Vedum. Thinks the limit should have been adjusted The government has come up with more details about its tax promises recently. If the 750,000 limit is fixed, the government will in practice deliver a tax increase to Norwegians, says head of department Rolf Lothe at the Taxpayers’ Association. – More people will be able to expect higher taxes, given that there will be wage growth in the coming years. And it is likely, especially against the background of the price increase we are seeing now, he says. Section manager Rolf Lothe at the Taxpayers’ Association believes that a fixed limit of NOK 750,000 will in practice increase the tax burden on Norwegians. Photo: Beate Riiser / news Although the literal promise is preserved, Lothe believes that it is disorderly that neither Sp nor Ap told the voters last year how the tax promise should be interpreted. – There is no reason not to take into account price growth or wage growth in such reasoning. In this sense, it would be neat to communicate that the limit will not be moved upwards, says Lothe. Vedum believes he has not created fertile ground for misunderstandings with the tax promise. – We have been clear over time. The Center Party and the Labor Party said in the election campaign that this was the intersection, he says. But the taxes will be adjusted At the same time as the tax limit is fixed, large tax jumps are expected on everything from petrol to tobacco. Usually, the fees are increased according to the price increase in the rest of society. This year, the price increase is likely to exceed 5.7 per cent, Statistics Norway estimates. It will make a liter of beer 1 kroner and 54 øre more expensive just in taxes and VAT from the new year, while the tax increase at the turn of the year was 35 øre. The fees will presumably be raised as much as the prices increase in society. Photo: Josh Olalde / Unsplash Lothe believes that it is not up to the government to adjust the taxes, but not the tax limit for the salary of Norwegians. – Fees are mostly adjusted upwards every year in line with price growth. When the government doesn’t do that with its tax promise, you can think that it doesn’t fit together well, he says.

ttn-69

The government made a promise last year that no one earning less than NOK 750,000 would pay more tax.
