Although these figures may seem modest nationwide, the chufa is a characteristic culture of the area and is crucial for hundreds of \u00a0Valencian families\u00a0.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n A plague with fifteen years of history.<\/strong> One of the main factors threatening chufa production is a disease known as ”\u00a0black spot\u00a0.” This condition, which appears as dark marks on the skin of the tuber, reduces its commercial value and leads to product waste, which must be discarded for not meeting market standards.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n First detected fifteen years ago\u2014coinciding with the initial plantings of \u00a0African chufa seeds\u00a0 in Valencia, Ava-Asaja states<\/a>\u2014the disease is well characterized but poorly addressed. According to statements collected by Europa Press<\/a>, the \u00a0Agrarian Organization\u00a0 laments that the Ministry of Agriculture has not provided the sector with adequate information about the disease’s characteristics, its causes, or effective combat methods. They call upon the \u00a0Valencian Institute for Agricultural Research (IVIA)\u00a0 to intensify studies aimed at controlling this plague, whose impact continues to rise.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n A weed that sweeps everything.<\/strong> In addition to black spot, another alarming threat has emerged: the appearance of an \u00a0invasive weed\u00a0 in chufa fields.
