This initiative, financially supported by the Ministry of Solidarity of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, is titled “Support in the Degree and Postgraduate Formation of Medicine in Mozambique.” Its primary goal is to enhance the capabilities of internal doctors in Mozambique.

Addressing Healthcare Needs

This project is designed to tackle the healthcare challenges faced by the central region of Mozambique. By increasing the medical-to-patient ratio, the initiative aims to significantly improve health indices in the area. The program seeks to strengthen the training of both medical students and resident doctors, fostering a sustainable healthcare system that can better serve the population. According to the regional government, the initiative will contribute to the ongoing improvement of medical education and healthcare practices in the country.

Strengthening Medical Faculties

Dr. Luis López leads the project, which focuses on bolstering the Medicine Faculties in Mozambique. By enhancing the training programs for medical specialties, the project intends to ensure that future educators are well-prepared to pass on knowledge in essential medical fields. The ultimate goal is to establish self-sufficiency in medical education, allowing Mozambique to cultivate its own healthcare professionals and improve access to quality and affordable healthcare services.

Under this program, the Unizambeze, a Public University in Mozambique, is set to receive essential support in its medical faculty. This support includes the provision of teaching staff to cover the second cycle of medicine, specifically for the 4th and 6th courses. The focus areas include internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics. By equipping the University with skilled educators, the project aims to foster a more capable generation of healthcare providers.

Financial Support and Collaboration

The project has received generous funding from the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, which has allocated €100,000 in direct subsidies to FICISC. Collaborative efforts involve partnerships with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Maternal and Child Health University Hospital Complex of the Canary Islands. Together, these institutions aim to create a strong educational framework that can support the revitalization of healthcare in Mozambique.

Target Audience and Goals

The initiative is primarily directed toward medical students from the Unizambeze and Internal Resident Physicians (MIR). Priority is given to those who have obtained their medical degrees through the partnership between ULPGC and UNIZAMBEZE. In total, approximately 300 health professionals and specialists in Mozambique stand to benefit from this project.

Moreover, the Canary Health Service is also involved in completing and implementing the training of resident doctors through six-month rotations in public hospitals in the Canary Islands. Young doctors will gain invaluable experience at institutions like the Child-Maternal University Hospital Complex in Gran Canaria. Such exposure is crucial for molding strong healthcare professionals capable of tackling medical challenges back home.

Comprehensive Training and Development

In addition to conventional training, the project includes various educational opportunities. Canarian specialists are set to teach courses that fill gaps in the Unizambeze faculty’s offerings. There will also be professional training courses for healthcare personnel on specific issues as requested by local authorities. Furthermore, an expert course will be available for students aiming to enroll in a doctoral program.

This multifaceted approach ensures that the medical workforce in Mozambique is well-equipped to address the region’s health needs. The effort to enhance training, provide specialized education, and share knowledge is a significant step toward a more self-reliant healthcare system.

The collaborative initiative led by the Canary Health Service signifies a transformative effort towards improving medical education and healthcare quality in Mozambique. By investing in human resources and educational frameworks, this project holds the potential to elevate the standard of medical practice and ultimately contribute to the betterment of health standards. Such globalization of health education underscores the importance of shared knowledge and resources, paving the way for a healthier future in Mozambique and beyond.

General News – 2

Enhancing Medical Education in Mozambique The Canary Health Service (SCS), in collaboration with the Foundation Institute of Sanitary Research of the Canary Islands (FICISC), has embarked on an ambitious project aimed at improving medical education in Mozambique.
