She has experienced the thrill of winning titles, the pressure of finals, and carried the weight of an invisible armband earned through goals and character—an inspiring combination that now places her at the helm of the women’s national team during a pivotal moment where aspiration and expectation are measured by the same standard.

Born in the Madrid district of Vallecas, where makeshift goals were commonplace and a ball felt like an extension of her feet, Bermúdez grew up in a family of footballers. Her father played, but it was her mother who had a more prominent journey: she was called to join the Spanish national team but left the sport upon becoming pregnant with “Soni.”

From a young age, the future head coach of the national team played alongside the boys at school, with the ball perpetually at her feet and dreams of making it big. Her pathway was marked by sacrifice, arising each day at 6:00 AM to work, whether at a café or a slaughterhouse, before coaching a group of local girls and then training herself. This demanding routine forged the determination that would ultimately lead her to the elite realm of sports.

Bermúdez quickly began to shine at Butarque Leganés, before making the leap to Sporting de Huelva (1999-2003), a founding member of the current Liga F established in 2001 and the first women’s team from the Andalusian city.

After a season at Sabadell, she returned to her local club, Rayo Vallecano, in 2004, where she spent an impressive seven seasons.

The Gateway to First Titles

Rayo Vallecano served as the launchpad for her first titles and a career filled with victories that she never dared to imagine would eventually lead her to the leadership of the senior women’s national team. In 2008, she broke barriers by guiding the ‘franjirrojas’ to their first-ever Copa de la Reina title; this was solidified with three consecutive league wins between 2008 and 2010.

These golden years for Rayo were stellar for Bermúdez, alongside a strong group of players like Marta Unzué, Adriana Martín, and Silvia Zarza. Not only did they win titles, but they also helped lay the groundwork for the growth and professionalization of women’s football in Spain, prior to the emergence of giants like Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.

The definitive leap came in 2011 when she joined Barcelona. She became the club’s all-time leading scorer, netting 123 goals in 141 appearances, a record later surpassed by Jenni Hermoso and Alexia Putellas. During her tenure, she secured four league titles, a Copa de la Reina, and four consecutive top scorer trophies in Primera Iberdrola.

Bermúdez’s scoring prowess and presence in the box made her an undeniable reference for several generations. In 2014, she decided to test her skills across the Atlantic, playing for a few months with the Western New York Flash (USA), where she teamed up with fellow Spanish player Vicky Losada.

Upon returning to Spain, Bermúdez made Atlético de Madrid her new home (2015-2018). There, she was pivotal in a successful cycle that included two league titles and a Copa de la Reina, affirming that wherever the Madrid forward played, victory seemed to follow.

Parallel to her club successes, Bermúdez provided an offensive reference for the Spanish national team and was a leader in the locker room since her debut in 2008. With 34 goals to her name, she participated in two European Championships (2009 and 2013) and two World Cups (2011 and 2015), becoming a fundamental pillar during Spain’s rise to a global power in this sport.

From the Field to the Sidelines

Bermúdez hung up her boots at Levante in 2020, but her retirement did not signal a farewell to football. “I would love to be connected to this sport. I’ve always been interested in the coaching world and loved analyzing the game and opponents. Ultimately, I need to learn, and it’s better to do so actively since I can balance it,” the athlete stated in an interview with EFE on April 11, 2020.

She quickly began training as a coach and immersed herself in nurturing Spain’s young prospects. Her coaching journey began with the Real Madrid’s cadet girls team, until the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) hired her to manage the U-19 team in 2022 and most recently, the U-23 squad.

In addition to her enviable experience and accolades as a player, it was the two Euro Championships won with the U-19 (2023 and 2024) that tipped the scales for the federation’s board members to appoint her as Montse Tomé’s successor.

In August 2023, Bermúdez was one of eleven members of the technical staff of the Spanish women’s national team who offered their positions to the RFEF in support of Jenni Hermoso and the other international players following the actions of then-president Luis Rubiales during the World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand.

In a 2020 interview with the RFEF, ‘Soni’ expressed her belief that Spain would become one of the great national teams in the world within four to five years. Today, that prediction has come to fruition, and she stands at the helm to continue building her path to ‘gold.’

General News – 2

Actualizado Lunes, 11 agosto 2025 – 16:43 Sonia Bermúdez (November 15, 1984) has been one of the most significant forwards in Spanish football for two decades.
