In a tragic incident that has captured international attention, the \u00a0Chilean state mining company Codelco\u00a0 has launched an \u00a0international audit\u00a0 to investigate the \u00a0collapse\u00a0 at its Lieutenant site, which claimed the lives of six workers. This tragic event marks the \u00a0deadliest\u00a0 mining accident in over three decades at the world’s largest underground copper mine.<\/p>\n

During a press conference, \u00a0M\u00e1ximo Pacheco\u00a0, the president of Codelco\u2019s Board of Directors, emphasized the significance of the audit. \u201cWe will engage the foremost experts not only in \u00a0geomechanics\u00a0 and \u00a0geophysics\u00a0, but also in \u00a0underground mining\u00a0 and safety protocols,\u201d he stated. He assured that the findings would be reported directly to the Board, which aims to uncover the failures that led to this calamity.<\/p>\n

The \u00a0collapse\u00a0, commonly referred to as a ”\u00a0rock burst\u00a0,” occurred after a \u00a04.2 magnitude earthquake\u00a0 struck the Andesite sector of the mine, situated about \u00a0120 kilometers south of Santiago\u00a0. The timing of the earthquake has raised questions about its origin, as investigations seek to determine whether it was a natural occurrence or a result of Codelco’s mining activities.<\/p>\n

The sequence of events began shortly after the earthquake triggered a detachment at the Andesite sector, claiming the life of one worker nearly instantly. Codelco promptly reported that a group of five more miners was trapped in a nearby area known as the \u00a0Lieutenant 7 level\u00a0. This initiated a desperate rescue operation to reach the miners, whose health and status were unknown, as communication was lost.<\/p>\n

By Saturday, hopes dimmed as the first of the five bodies was discovered. As time progressed, the reality set in, confirming the worst fears\u2014none of the miners had survived. The situation reflected the dangers associated with underground mining, an industry notorious for its perilous working conditions.<\/p>\n

In addition to the audit, the \u00a0Prosecutor’s Office\u00a0 has launched an investigation to examine whether there was any \u00a0negligence\u00a0 on Codelco’s part. The collapse site has been cordoned off as investigative teams work comprehensively to unravel the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Pacheco assured that Codelco would fully cooperate in the inquiry, acknowledging the need for transparency and accountability.<\/p>\n

If any responsibility is determined, Codelco will implement strict measures, as affirmed by Pacheco, who emphasized the absence of previous complaints regarding \u00a0earthquake\u00a0 activity from workers. Mining operations in the underground section remain halted, although surface operations are still ongoing, leading to uncertainties about when full operations can resume.<\/p>\n

With an extensive network of \u00a0over 4,500 kilometers of tunnels\u00a0, the Lieutenant mine produced \u00a0356,000 metric tons\u00a0 of fine copper in 2024 alone, making it a vital source of \u00a0copper production\u00a0 globally.<\/p>\n

In the wake of this tragedy, \u00a0President Gabriel Boric\u00a0 stated his commitment to transparency and justice. He announced a \u00a0three-day national mourning\u00a0 period and underscored the need for thorough investigations to hold accountable those responsible for this tragedy, ensuring that lessons are learned to prevent future incidents.<\/p>\n
