Mar\u00eda de Jes\u00fas Mundo<\/b>, affectionately known as “La Abuelita de la Capu,” passed away on Thursday, July 24, at the age of 79, on one of the benches of the Puebla bus central<\/b>, where she had spent the last three years waiting to be reunited with her children.<\/p>\n

Her story, marked by \u00a0abandonment\u00a0, \u00a0hope\u00a0, and unwavering \u00a0faith\u00a0, resonated with thousands across the nation after gaining traction on social media in 2024.<\/p>\n

Do\u00f1a Mary<\/b> settled in Puebla over three decades ago. After being evicted from her home in the San Andr\u00e9s Unit of Tehuac\u00e1n in 2022, she moved to the CAPU, fueled by the hope that her children would eventually find her there. Her son, Victor Manuel<\/b>, migrated to the United States, while her daughters, Mar\u00eda Guadalupe<\/b> and Soul<\/b>, allegedly resided in Puebla. Friends had informed her that one of her children might come through that terminal, and thus, she stayed with unwavering conviction that one day they would come looking for her.<\/p>\n

During her more than \u00a01,000 days\u00a0 at the CAPU, Do\u00f1a Mary relied on the \u00a0charity\u00a0 of the bus terminal’s patrons and employees. She sang for coins, accepted food donations, and kept her belongings organized in a bag that she carried everywhere. <\/p>\n

Despite her escalating \u00a0health issues\u00a0\u2014including leg infections and urinary incontinence\u2014she steadfastly refused offers to move to a shelter from both the state and municipal \u00a0DIF\u00a0 (Family Development Integral System). “Here we remained,” she would say, holding on to her hope.<\/p>\n

Tragically, last Thursday afternoon, passengers observed that Do\u00f1a Mary was unresponsive in her usual spot. After realizing something was wrong, they alerted the \u00a0Auxiliary Police\u00a0, who called 911. Paramedics from the \u00a0Red Cross\u00a0 confirmed her death. <\/p>\n

Authorities cordoned off the area, and her remains were dispatched to the \u00a0Forensic Medical Service\u00a0 (Semefo), awaiting any family members who might claim her body.<\/p>\n

During her time at the station, Mar\u00eda de Jes\u00fas became a familiar figure to regular commuters. Her \u00a0dignity\u00a0, \u00a0calmness\u00a0, and \u00a0perseverance\u00a0 amidst adversity turned her into a symbol of a painful reality: the lives of countless elderly individuals without a support system, left to endure the streets.<\/p>\n

The narrative surrounding Do\u00f1a Mary has inspired citizens to propose a \u00a0symbolic tribute\u00a0 in the CAPU, shining a light on the urgent need for greater empathy and systematic care for vulnerable senior citizens. <\/p>\n

Until her last breath, Mrs. Mary clung to the hope of reuniting with her children. She passed away as she lived in recent years: waiting for a \u00a0hug\u00a0 that never came.<\/p>\n
