In this context, a more emboldened \u00a0Putin\u00a0 has motivated countries such as Lithuania<\/a>, Latvia<\/a>, France<\/a>, and Denmark to reconsider and strengthen their \u00a0military recruitment\u00a0 efforts. Many nations have been looking at the \u00a0“Nordic model,”\u00a0 and now, \u00a0Germany\u00a0 appears set to adopt a similar framework.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

However, the proposed changes are nuanced.<\/p>\n

The awakening of an army.<\/strong> In a recent report by the Financial Times<\/a>, it was revealed that Germany is preparing to make a significant shift in its defense policy by launching a new program for \u00a0voluntary military service\u00a0. The goal is to recruit up to 40,000 young people annually<\/a>, aligning itself with the new European strategic landscape following Russia’s invasion.<\/p>\n

Suspended since 2011, Germany’s previous mandatory military service has been the subject of intense debate. Concurrently, the reservist body seeks to expand from 60,000 to 200,000, necessitating significant transformations in recruitment and training processes.<\/p>\n

Economic incentive.<\/strong> To facilitate these aims, the program outlines a series of incentives designed to attract \u00a018-year-olds\u00a0, the primary demographic targeted by this initiative. Starting in 2026, all males reaching this age (approximately 300,000 annually) will be required to complete a mandatory questionnaire<\/a> assessing their eligibility for service, while female participation will remain voluntary.<\/p>\n

Those who sign up can expect a \u00a0net salary of approximately 2,000 euros\u00a0 monthly, alongside language courses, technical training, driving license subsidies, and the opportunity to gain essential labor skills beyond military training.
