The \u00a0Metropolitan Municipality of Lima (MML)\u00a0, led by Mayor \u00a0Rafael L\u00f3pez Aliaga\u00a0, announced on Wednesday its decision to suspend participation in a technical table called by the \u00a0Ministry of Transportation (MTC)\u00a0. This decision comes after the municipal authorities recognized that the much-anticipated \u00a0Lima-Chosica train project\u00a0 will not be realized in the foreseeable future. The primary reason cited was a \u201c\u00a0lack of commitment\u00a0\u201d from the ministry, sparking considerable discussions within transportation circles.<\/p>\n

In a statement released on their X account, formerly known as Twitter, the commune expressed, \u201cThere are private operators willing to execute the project with \u00a0social rates\u00a0, and \u00a0no need to wait for four to five years\u00a0, as proposed by the MTC.\u201d This announcement emphasizes the urgency and readiness of private entities to take on the project, further highlighting the frustrations with government delays.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, MML lambasted the MTC for not sending the framework agreement that has been pending since May 2025. The delay also included the ministry\u2019s failure to authorize the use of land in \u00a0Chosica\u00a0 for the donated materials necessary for the project.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe MML reaffirms its commitment to efficient transport solutions for the residents in the eastern part of the capital,\u201d the statement concluded. This announcement was made on the same day that L\u00f3pez Aliaga called for the resignation of \u00a0C\u00e9sar Sandoval\u00a0, the head of the MTC.<\/p>\n

Last week, during a ministerial meeting, a technical table was convened to dialogue over the train project. However, L\u00f3pez Aliaga opted not to attend in person, delegating the responsibility to a municipal team.<\/p>\n

In response, C\u00e9sar Sandoval stated that the \u00a0Lima-Chosica train\u00a0 would not commence operations in 2025 and suggested that neither a white march nor a demonstration would be feasible this year. This discord raises questions about the timeline and commitment to a project that is deemed crucial for many residents.<\/p>\n

Both alternatives require the development of technical profiles and profiles that address operational, economic, and infrastructural concerns.<\/p>\n

On the same occasion, L\u00f3pez Aliaga formally requested President \u00a0Dina Boluarte\u00a0 to reconsider Sandoval’s position, articulating his \u201cmost energetic rejection\u201d of the latter\u2019s claims about the project\u2019s timeline. He further elaborated that this transportation service would \u00a0directly benefit\u00a0 over two million inhabitants, particularly those in \u00a0East Lima\u00a0. Notably, the municipality had managed to secure the donation of \u00a090 carriages and 19 locomotives\u00a0 in good condition, ideally to expedite the project’s implementation.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the rail initiative has been viewed by various sectors as a political maneuver by L\u00f3pez Aliaga, especially in light of the upcoming \u00a02026 elections\u00a0. The intertwining of politics and public infrastructure projects often raises skepticism about genuine commitment to public welfare versus electoral opportunism.<\/p>\n
