Peru Geophysical Institute (PGI)<\/b> organism assigned to the Ministry of Environment, received Dr. Aracely Quispe Neira, recognized Peruvian-American scientist at NASA, who shared her experiences in important space missions as part of the James Webb Flight Telescope and operations. The activity took place in the National Planetarium “Mutsumi Ishitsuka”<\/b> of the IGP located in Lima, and was officially reported by the same institute through its institutional page and social networks.<\/p>\n

This event was part of a series of activities organized by the CPF in conjunction with the United States Embassy, as part of the commemoration of the Bicentennial of diplomatic relations<\/b> between both countries. Quispe Neira’s visit aims to strengthen scientific and technological cooperation between Peru and the United States, inspiring new generations to pursue interests in Space Sciences and STEM careers (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).<\/p>\n

During her visit, Dr. Quispe shared with the Peruvian scientists of the PGI her professional experiences, including the technological challenges she encountered Working on large-scale projects within NASA. The scientist emphasized the Importance of opening academic and professional exchange spaces<\/b> and highlighted the scientific talent she encountered in her native country.<\/p>\n

“It is very important that spaces are opened for more Peruvians to have access to science, cutting-edge technology, and innovation. This visit to Peru has been a motivational experience because I have seen a lot of research; I consider that there is great potential that will yield positive results in this sector in the short term,” said the aerospace engineer.<\/p>\n

The event also included a special projection in the NATIONAL PLANETTARY OF IGP of the immersive experience “Inca constellations”<\/b>, an internationally awarded production that revalues the ancestral astronomical knowledge of the Andean peoples. The activity was attended by IGP authorities, researchers, and a delegation from the American embassy in Peru.<\/p>\n

Dr. Aracely Quispe Neira was born in Peru and currently serves as a scientist in the SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE OF NASA<\/b>. In 2024, her career was highlighted by NASA’s official website, showcasing her key role during the James Webb space telescope operations, the most advanced and ambitious astronomical instrument in modern history.<\/p>\n

\u201cThirty minutes after its launch, when we took control, I directed the commands. When I listen to my voice in the documentaries on Webb, I genuinely become excited. I feel gratified as a Peruvian-American and as a woman.<\/b> I had a great opportunity to collaborate with our team, NASA, and our partners during this historic event,\u201d said Quispe in an official NASA interview.<\/p>\n

Her work was recognized when NASA awarded a special prize to the flight team and operations behind James Webb. Dr. Quispe expressed, “This is not just an award; it is a very special recognition aimed at a team of professionals who have left their mark in history through a significant event, more than 30 years after this dream began with the James Webb space telescope.”<\/p>\n

The head of the PGI, Dr. Hernando Tavera, highlighted the importance of Quispe’s visit for young Peruvian scientists. “Dr. Aracely Quispe works on very important projects related to space research, which encourages the PGI to continue investing in technology and the formation of new generations in science,” he stated.<\/p>\n

Additionally, he emphasized that scientific knowledge is critical for national development<\/b> and that meetings like this strengthen the connection between national research and global scientific advances. “Her participation helps us enhance the connection between the research we conduct nationwide and international scientific advances. Moreover, her trajectory serves as an inspiration for new generations of researchers,” Tavera added.<\/p>\n

Quispe also stressed that she is not the only Peruvian working in high-level science. She mentioned that there are more national experts working in NASA, Europe, and Canada across various careers related to space sciences and technologies. This international presence showcases the potential of Peruvian talent when provided with training and development opportunities.<\/p>\n

The projection “Inca constellations”<\/b> symbolized one of the most emotional moments of the day, combining the Andean ancestral vision of the cosmos with modern scientific discoveries.
