The Syrian regime announced on Tuesday the entry of its security forces in Sweida<\/b>, a city predominantly inhabited by the \u00a0Druze\u00a0 community located in the southern part of the country, following three consecutive days of intense clashes. These confrontations, which erupted between militias of the \u00a0Ismaelite\u00a0 minority and \u00a0Bedouin\u00a0 groups, have left over a hundred casualties. The decision to deploy security forces was backed by local \u00a0religious leaders\u00a0, who also urged armed factions to \u00a0surrender their weapons\u00a0.<\/p>\n

The offensive launched by the \u00a0Syrian army\u00a0, coinciding with an announced ceasefire, occurred against a backdrop of escalating tensions in a region afflicted by \u00a0sectarian strife\u00a0. As reported by the Interior Ministry in Damascus, an \u00a0indefinite curfew\u00a0 has been implemented in the city. “The forces of the \u00a0Ministry of Interior and Defense\u00a0 will begin to enter the center of Sweida,” stated General Ahmad Dalati, the head of security in the area.<\/p>\n

In response to escalating tensions, \u00a0Israel\u00a0 launched several airstrikes targeting positions held by the regime in the city. The first attack occurred on Monday, followed by additional strikes on Tuesday, as reported by the official Syrian news agency \u00a0SANA\u00a0. The \u00a0Israeli government\u00a0 confirmed these operations, emphasizing that it will not permit hostile military presence near its northern borders.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are acting to prevent the Syrian regime from compromising the \u00a0Druze\u00a0 population and ensuring the \u00a0demilitarization of the border area\u00a0,\u201d stated Prime Minister \u00a0Benjamin Netanyahu\u00a0 alongside Defense Minister \u00a0Israel Katz\u00a0. Both officials have ordered the army to target \u00a0tanks and armored vehicles\u00a0 of the Syrian regime identified in convoys heading towards Sweida, as well as strategic routes leading to the city.<\/p>\n

An official statement from Israel’s defense forces (\u00a0IDF\u00a0) confirmed the action, detailing that they had begun attacking military vehicles belonging to the Syrian regime in the \u00a0AS-SWEIDA\u00a0 region. This operation was launched after \u00a0convoys\u00a0 containing personnel carriers and tanks were observed moving towards southern Syria.<\/p>\n

The Syrian defense minister, \u00a0Murhaf Ab\u00fa Qasra\u00a0, declared a \u00a0total ceasefire\u00a0 in Sweida and assured that government forces would take action against any \u00a0illegal groups\u00a0 that violate the agreement. He also reassured residents that they could return home once order is restored, warning, “Those who violate the ceasefire will face consequences,” he asserted in a social media post.<\/p>\n

The hostilities prompting this escalation began with armed clashes between \u00a0Druze and Bedouin militias\u00a0, resulting in at least \u00a0102 fatalities\u00a0, as reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The casualties include \u00a061 Druze\u00a0, including two children, \u00a018 Bedouins\u00a0, \u00a016 security personnel\u00a0, and seven unidentified individuals wearing military uniforms. The same agency reported many wounded, several of whom are in critical condition.<\/p>\n

The province of \u00a0Sweida\u00a0 serves as the main bastion for the \u00a0Druze\u00a0 community in Syria, a religious minority regarded as an esoteric branch of \u00a0Shia Islam\u00a0, with an estimated population of around 700,000 in the country. Significant Druze communities are also present in \u00a0Israel\u00a0 and \u00a0Lebanon\u00a0. In this context, Israeli authorities have reiterated their commitment to \u00a0protecting Druze\u00a0 individuals in Syria, reflecting historical and familial ties with the Druze in Israel.<\/p>\n

Since the collapse of the regime led by \u00a0Bashar al-Assad\u00a0 in December 2024, an outcome of a robust rebel offensive spearheaded by the group \u00a0Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS)\u00a0, the transitional government led by \u00a0Ahmed al-Shara\u00a0 (previously known as Mohamed al-Golani Ab\u00fa) has been confronting serious \u00a0security challenges\u00a0, many marked by ingrained sectarian violence.<\/p>\n

Despite Damascus’s efforts to expand its territorial control and integrate local militias into its framework, the situation in \u00a0Sweida\u00a0 reveals the \u00a0challenges\u00a0 faced by the new political order in stabilizing vital regions of the country. It also underscores the limitations of central authority when confronting military interventions from foreign powers such as \u00a0Israel\u00a0. The sustainability of the ceasefire and the disarmament of Druze militias will be critical to prevent further escalation in violence.<\/p>\n
