In the early hours of \u00a0Thursday, July 10, 2025\u00a0, an \u00a0earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2\u00a0 shook the center of the department of \u00a0Cundinamarca\u00a0, Colombia. This seismic event was significant enough to be felt across several municipalities and raised concerns among residents.<\/p>\n

According to the \u00a0Colombian Geological Service (SGC)\u00a0, the tremor occurred at \u00a04:27 AM\u00a0 with its epicenter located \u00a06 kilometers from Cucunub\u00e1\u00a0, a municipality in the department. The earthquake prompted immediate responses from local governmental bodies and officials.<\/p>\n

The SGC released additional details, stating that the earthquake originated at a depth of \u00a0140 kilometers\u00a0. This depth explains why residents in municipalities like \u00a0Languazaque\u00a0 (8 km from the epicenter) and \u00a0Ubat\u00e9\u00a0 (13 km away) reported feeling the tremor.<\/p>\n

Reports from Blu Radio<\/i> confirmed that residents in urban areas such as \u00a0Bogot\u00e1\u00a0, \u00a0Villavicencio\u00a0, and \u00a0Tunja\u00a0 felt the tremor as well. Fortunately, the SGC stated that \u00a0no significant damage\u00a0 or injuries have been reported thus far. This seismic event was detected by \u00a060 seismic stations\u00a0 throughout Colombia, which facilitated prompt analysis.<\/p>\n

An official stated that despite receiving \u00a018 reports\u00a0 of tremors, it is effectively a \u00a0typical earthquake\u00a0 for the region. They noted, “It is an earthquake typical to the area near the Nest of Bucaramanga, although it is less common for this type of tremor to occur in the southern regions.”<\/p>\n

In water bodies, the shaking can provoke erratic waves or flooding, noticeable in \u00a0reservoirs, rivers, or lagoons\u00a0. Other phenomena might include uneven terrain, fallen branches, and dust clouds in dry environments.<\/p>\n

To ensure safety during earthquakes, the \u00a0UNGRD\u00a0 (National Disaster Risk Management Unit) and the \u00a0*Red Cross\u00a0* recommend remaining calm, identifying safe zones at home or work, and maintaining an emergency kit. This kit should include essential items such as \u00a0water, non-perishable foods, a flashlight, a battery-powered radio\u00a0, and important documents, including duplicates of keys.<\/p>\n
