In June last year, Norway delivered two training matches against Greece and Luxembourg which were so weak that you could both laugh and laugh. The pace was slow. The selection failed. The stars were wrapped. Norway has now taken two of the national team’s strongest victories since the turn of the millennium, away against Serbia and Sweden. It is not only the results that give faith that Norway can reach the European Championships. That’s also the way they have done it. Will never be like Brazil In both matches, the match picture has been as one might expect if Norway meets an assumed stronger opponent in the European Championships. For large periods, Norway resisted periods of intense pressure towards its own goal. Especially after the break, they were played low by Serbia and Sweden, who pumped posts and corners into the Norwegian box. One can consider this worrying, since Norway had to fight for so long with its back to the wall. In an ideal world, they had controlled the battles all the time. But the players got tired, and Norway met two good teams. Besides, these situations are something the national team must master no matter what. Passed the TEST: Norway met two strong teams and won both matches. Photo: Fredrik Varfjell / NTB No matter how much better Ståle Solbakken makes this team, Norway will never be like Brazil or Spain. They can push hard and roll the ball, but in the playoffs they will face strong teams. They will have to defend themselves deeply. They will need tackles, rescues and blocks. In this sense, the matches against Serbia and Sweden were not only part of the road to the European Championships, but a test of whether Norway actually has something to do there. Here they got through with bravura. Kings in the box Much of the reason is about how Solbakken has teased the team, that the team parts are more connected, that the distances between the players are better. Such things take time, and Solbakken was always aware that one could not demand perfection last summer. It is encouraging to hear him say that Norway still has a lot to improve. In addition to the tactics, Norway has put in place players who suit such situations. Ørjan Nyland has delivered two good games, the two defenders contribute forward and are tough to get past, and the three in the middle work hard to shield the defense. But the key in these two matches has been the stoppers, Stefan Strandberg and Leo Østigård, who have shown an enormous ability to defend their own box. Norway needs such qualities if they are to win matches in a European Championship. Now they seem to have them. Shots under pressure A positive trend in the two matches has been how few great chances Norway has received. In general, teams that defend deeply tend to drop a number of shots. It is almost inevitable. The most important thing then is to only allow shots that are taken under pressure, or from a distance, or with many Norwegian players between the ball and the goal. Teams like Burnley and Atlético Madrid have often played like this over the last decade – and succeeded. Atlético in particular have taken many scalps by going out in high pressure, getting an early goal and then going deep and closing off all rooms. They could block shots and clearer posts for more than an hour, and they seemed comfortable with that. When you get shot again and again without letting in, it’s not just luck. SOLID: The stopper pair Stefan Strandberg and Leo Skiri Østigård impressed against both Serbia and Sweden. Photo: Christine Olsson / TT / NTB The same can be said about Norway in these two matches. Serbia had 13 finishes, Norway had four. But if you look at “expected goals”, the statistics that calculate how big the chances were, the teams ended up almost the same. Norway’s four finishes were thus as dangerous as Serbia’s 13. Sweden won the shooting statistics 13-12, but again Norway created by far the biggest chances. That says something about the defensive game. And then it helps to have perhaps the world’s best counterattack. An attack alone The ability to defend your own box is a perfect combination with Erling Braut Haaland. In England, there has already been a lot of talk about how Haaland will fit into Manchester City. The reason is that City attack over many moves, with several short passes, which makes the rivals go deep and close off the back room. With Norway in tough matches, this is not a problem. STAR: Erling Braut Haaland is an attack alone for Norway. Photo: Ole Berg-Rusten / NTB When the national team is played so low in the field, they could not have dreamed of a better striker than Haaland. He gets the back room he loves, and he gets room to challenge the stoppers and shake off the markers. At his best, he is an attack alone. Norway can in theory defend themselves for 89 minutes, before a simple long pass against Haaland leads to a goal. Great chances The challenge is to find a link between the deep defense and Haaland who can get the ball to him in good positions. It may be a stick from Martin Ødegaard, which we have seen before. It may be a stub from Alexander Sørloth, which we saw in Sweden on Sunday. Beyond that, Haaland is excellent at running free in the field and finding dangerous positions, something he has shown for Dortmund for a long time, and which he demonstrated with the race before scoring against Serbia. It is a truth that applies to all top scorers. Some finish better than others, but the hallmark of the best is how many great chances they get. This is about flair, running, timing, focus, and the physical ability to get in the right position. Few, if any, are better than Haaland at this. Combined with the defensive game, this has given Norway a promising ability over these two matches. They are good at avoiding big chances against. They are good at creating themselves. And if you can do it, you have come a long way.

ttn-69

A lot can happen in one year.
