The Provincial Court of Las Palmas has confirmed \u00a0severe penalties\u00a0 for two residents of Gran Canaria, a couple who were found guilty of \u00a0sexual abuse\u00a0 involving their two daughters, aged \u00a04 and 5 years old\u00a0, for the \u00a0elaboration of child pornography\u00a0. The case came to light in mid-June following the father\u2019s confession amidst evidence from numerous recordings. The \u00a0Prosecutor’s Office\u00a0 initially sought a \u00a0total of 42 years\u00a0 in prison for the couple.<\/p>\n

On June 30, the Court affirmed the sentences: \u00a036 years for the father\u00a0 and \u00a032 years for the mother\u00a0, detailing how they committed their crimes from October 2019 to June 2022 by recording video abuses. The father is the \u00a0biological parent\u00a0 of one daughter, while the mother is the parent of the other.<\/p>\n

During the investigation, law enforcement seized crucial \u00a0evidence\u00a0 in the form of audiovisual material stored on various technological devices belonging to the defendants. This included \u00a0two mobile phones, three hard drives, and a USB memory stick\u00a0. Disturbingly, their devices contained \u00a0over 200 pornographic files\u00a0, not limited to images of the children.<\/p>\n

The Government approved on Tuesday in the Council of Ministers the plan to compensate the victims of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church whose cases are very old, have prescribed, or have not contributed sufficient evidence. The Government has advanced that the crime of trafficking will be included in the Central Registry of Sexual Criminals and has approved to distribute 190 million euros to the Autonomous Communities, aiming to facilitate family reconciliation with children under 16 years of age. The court detailed testimonies depicting the horrifying acts committed against the minors. According to the evidence, “the defendant, at his home on the island of Gran Canaria, from October 2019 until early June 2022, acted upon his \u00a0sexual attraction to minor girls\u00a0 by maintaining sexual relations with his youngest daughter repeatedly.” Shocking accounts indicate that on at least one occasion, the accused mother was complicit, participating in abusive acts against her daughter.<\/p>\n

The ruling emphasizes that the acts committed by the defendants represent a \u00a0grave attack on the sexual freedom\u00a0 of the minors, who lacked the ability to give consent due to their young ages. The court recognized the utter depravity of the actions, condemning them as unequivocally abusive.<\/p>\n

In terms of \u00a0civil liability\u00a0, the court mandated compensation of \u00a0100,000 euros for each minor\u00a0, with the father bearing a larger responsibility. Additionally, he is required to pay \u00a05,000 euros\u00a0 for damages caused to the mother of one of the victims.<\/p>\n

Beyond the prison sentences, the court imposed further measures to protect the victims’ wellbeing. This includes \u00a0deprivation of parental rights\u00a0, an absolute disqualification from roles involving minors, and a \u00a010-year prohibition\u00a0 against approaching or communicating with the victims. Moreover, they must serve a decade under supervision upon completing their prison sentences.<\/p>\n

Initially facing potential sentences totaling \u00a042 years\u00a0, the father\u2019s confession led to a reduction of his punishment to \u00a036 years\u00a0, whereas the mother\u2019s was set at \u00a032 years\u00a0. Key aspects of their sentences included \u00a0two eleven-year sentences for rape\u00a0 and \u00a0two seven-year sentences for child pornography\u00a0. The gravity of these crimes cannot be overstated, highlighting the urgent need for \u00a0comprehensive care for victims\u00a0 of sexual violence.<\/p>\n
