Sadly, it never arrived. On June 23, after several weeks adrift due to a fire on board, the freighter <strong> sank into the deep waters<\/strong> of the North Pacific, more than 600 kilometers southwest of Adak, Alaska. <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/06\/25\/morning-midas-sinks-cargo-ship-fire\/84348819007\/\" target=\"_blank\">It disappeared silently<\/a>, leaving a trail of smoke, steel, and abandoned cars that would never touch the mainland.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 1 --> <\/p>\n<p>The fire began on June 3. <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news.uscg.mil\/Press-Releases\/Article\/4211030\/update-2-coast-guard-responds-to-vessel-fire-offshore-adak-alaska\/\" target=\"_blank\">According to the United States Coast Guard<\/a>, the smoke was emanating from the deck housing electric vehicles. On board were 22 crew members, all of whom successfully evacuated in time and were rescued by the freighter <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marinetraffic.com\/en\/ais\/details\/ships\/shipid:213002\/mmsi:256932000\/imo:9308510\/vessel:COSCO_HELLAS\" target=\"_blank\">Cosco Hellas<\/a>, which happened to be in the vicinity.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 2 --><\/p>\n<h2>A Freighter Adrift in the Micronesian Ocean<\/h2>\n<p>For days, the Morning Midas drifted, still enveloped in smoke. Rescue teams, working alongside Zodiac Maritime\u2014the ship&#8217;s operator\u2014attempted to assess the situation and<strong> prepared for a potential recovery<\/strong>. Unfortunately, they were unable to intervene in time. Structural damage combined with adverse weather conditions and water ingress ultimately led to its sinking, over 5,000 meters below the surface.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 3 -->  <\/p>\n<p>The cargo was not only numerous but also revealing: 3,048 vehicles, which included 70 electric and 681 hybrid models. <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news.uscg.mil\/Press-Releases\/Article\/4206451\/coast-guard-responds-to-vessel-fire-offshore-adak-alaska\/#:~:text=3%2C048%C2%A0vehicles%2C%20with%C2%A070%C2%A0being%20fully%20electric%20vehicles%20and%20681%20being%20partial%20hybrid%20electric%20vehicles\" target=\"_blank\">According to updated data from the Coast Guard<\/a>, after validating the figures with Zodiac Maritime, each vehicle likely had a designated destination\u2014either a dealer or a consumer. The ship is noted to have carried approximately 350 metric tons of gas fuel and around 1,530 metric tons of very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO).<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 7 --><\/p>\n<p>Maritime car transport serves as a vital piece of \u00a0industrial machinery\u00a0. While it may seem alarming to load over 3,000 vehicles on a single ship, this practice has become increasingly common.
