These settlements are nestled along the \u00a0Cantabrian\u00a0, \u00a0Atlantic\u00a0, and \u00a0Mediterranean\u00a0 coasts, and vary in age from the ancient village of <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/viajes.nationalgeographic.com.es\/a\/pueblo-mas-antiguo-espana_19672\" target=\"_blank\">Bra\u00f1osera<\/a>, which dates back to the ninth century, to newer settlements whose origins may still be recounted by their residents. Among these recent establishments are the approximately \u00a0300 villages\u00a0 created during Francisco Franco&#8217;s regime, which were part of his controversial <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mapa.gob.es\/es\/ministerio\/publicaciones-archivo-biblioteca\/mediateca\/colonizacion\" target=\"_blank\">colonization policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 1 --><\/p>\n<h2>The &#8220;Invented&#8221; Villages by Franco<\/h2>\n<p><strong>55,000<\/strong>. The program\u2019s allure was undeniable; families that opted to relocate were promised homes alongside expansive irrigation lands. Unfortunately, the ideal painted by the INC did not always translate into \u00a0reality\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 3 --><\/p>\n<p>Settlers were expected to meet specific criteria to qualify for land allocation. Although the lots were said to be distributed via a *lottery*, allegations arose suggesting that not all candidates had \u00a0equal\u00a0 opportunity. Franco&#8217;s regime favored larger families that could contribute labor and adhered to its strict socio-cultural archetype\u2014\u00a0devout\u00a0, hardworking Catholics. It was crucial that these settlers had no prior affiliations with the political opposition.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 4 --><\/p>\n<p>As reported by <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.es\/historia\/300-pueblos-invento-franco-sufrimiento-tras-falso-20250107120433-nt.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>ABC<\/em><\/a>, regulations established in \u00a01945\u00a0 outlined how settlers could access housing based on financial eligibility. Furthermore, the repayment terms could extend up to \u00a025 years\u00a0, with high interest rates complicating matters.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 6 --><\/p>\n<p>To oversee the settlers, the INC established a detailed hierarchy that included agronomists and \u00a0foremen\u00a0, all the way down to local \u00a0supervisors\u00a0, to ensure adherence to the agricultural guidelines set in place.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 7 --><\/p>\n<h2>Goals of the Colonization Projects<\/h2>\n<p>The Franco regime aimed to achieve multiple objectives through these new settlements. The program intended to facilitate \u00a0agrarian transformation\u00a0, broaden cultivable lands, and revitalize rural Spain. However, it had underlying ideological motives as well.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 8 --><\/p>\n<p>Many villages bore names that referenced Franco and his regime, encapsulating the dictatorship&#8217;s intent to propagate its image while facilitating infrastructure development across Spain. This was in line with the regime&#8217;s broader commitment to establishing new \u00a0agricultural\u00a0 projects and irrigation initiatives.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 9 --><\/p>\n<p>The architectural landscape created by the INC featured modernist elements and is attributed to early-career architects like <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jos%C3%A9_Luis_Fern%C3%A1ndez_del_Amo\" target=\"_blank\">Jos\u00e9 L.
