And this time we are not talking about exotic species imported from a distant country, but about the discovery of \u00a0two new species\u00a0 of ants in Andalusia.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 1 --> <\/p>\n<p><strong>Two new species.<\/strong> The <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.laopiniondemalaga.es\/medio-ambiente\/2025\/06\/18\/descubren-nuevas-especies-hormigas-espana-118767883.html\" target=\"_blank\">finding of the two new species<\/a> both belonging to the genus <em>Oxyopomyrmex<\/em>, has been in charge of the researcher at the University of C\u00f3rdoba (UCO), \u00a0Joaqu\u00edn Reyes L\u00f3pez\u00a0. It&#8217;s about <em>O. arenarius<\/em> and <em>O. pallens<\/em>, discovered thanks to specimens found in Ja\u00e9n, Granada, and Huelva, including the renowned \u00a0Do\u00f1ana National Park\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 2 --><\/p>\n<p>The genus of ants <em>Oxyopomyrmex<\/em> is classified within the subfamily of the \u00a0Myrmicinae\u00a0. These, as explained by Reyes L\u00f3pez himself, can be found in the arid areas of the \u00a0Mediterranean basin\u00a0, although it is a taxonomic group on which there is little available information.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 3 --> <\/p>\n<p>Until now, we only knew the presence of two species of this genus in Spain, namely <em>O. santschii<\/em> and <em>O. saulcyi<\/em>. This new finding alters the number of known species of this group in the country, which now stands at four. According to the University, the discovery adds two new names to the list of about \u00a0300 species\u00a0 of ants that inhabit the \u00a0*Iberian Peninsula\u00a0*, as noted by the <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/efeverde.com\/investigador-de-cordoba-identifica-dos-nuevas-especies-hormigas-en-espana\/\" target=\"_blank\">EFE agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 4 --><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-asset article-asset-normal article-asset-center\">\n<div class=\"desvio-container\">\n<div class=\"desvio\">\n<div class=\"desvio-figure js-desvio-figure\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><em><strong>Oxyopomyrmex arenarius<\/strong><\/em>: According to <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2075-4450\/16\/6\/581\" target=\"_blank\">Reyes L\u00f3pez<\/a>, the name of this new species refers to the fact that all its nests were found in \u00a0sandy soils\u00a0. This species, whose type location is the Biological Station of the \u00a0Do\u00f1ana\u00a0, presents an oval head, and a coloration that ranges from the dark brown of its head and abdomen to lighter tones in its joints.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 5 --><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Oxyopomyrmex pallens<\/strong><\/em>: The name of the second identified species is derived from its \u00a0pale coloration\u00a0, which includes light and yellowish brown tones throughout its body. In this case, the municipality where it was first found is \u00a0Mures\u00a0, located in the province of Ja\u00e9n.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 6 --> <\/p>\n<p><strong>Electronic scanning microscopy.<\/strong> For the analysis, Reyes L\u00f3pez <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com.es\/mundo-animal\/investigadores-estudian-nidos-hormigas-y-confirman-jaen-granada-y-huelva-que-ciencia-ya-sospechaba_25336\" target=\"_blank\">turned to<\/a> electronic scanning microscopy, a sophisticated technique that allowed him to closely study the \u00a0morphological characteristics\u00a0 of these ants and compare them with features of other similar species.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 7 --><\/p>\n<p>The details of the study have been published <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2075-4450\/16\/6\/581\" target=\"_blank\">in an article<\/a> in the journal <em>Insects<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By limiting the territory.<\/strong> As one might expect, our understanding of these ants remains limited. The findings suggest that these species are typical of the southern part of the \u00a0Iberian Peninsula\u00a0, but there is potential for their habitat to extend further.
