Juliana Marins<\/b>, a 26-year-old \u00a0Brazilian tourist\u00a0, was found dead by local rescuers after being trapped in the \u00a0active volcano Mount Rinjani\u00a0 in Indonesia since Saturday, June 21. Her family communicated in a statement: \u201cShe did not survive.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to reports from Reuters<\/i>, the Brazilian government has confirmed her death and stated that adverse weather conditions had hindered the rescue efforts. The young woman\u2019s body was located by a team descending from the \u00a0Cemara Nunggal area\u00a0, situated between 2,600 and 3,000 meters above sea level. The official cause of death has yet to be confirmed and will be investigated by local authorities.<\/p>\n

Marins was a marketing professional<\/b> from Niter\u00f3i in the \u00a0state of Rio de Janeiro\u00a0. She left Brazil in February to embark on a \u00a0backpacking journey across Asia\u00a0, having already traveled to the \u00a0Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand\u00a0.<\/p>\n

Marins fell into Mount Rinjani<\/b>, an active volcano in Indonesia, from a cliff while hiking to the summit. Originally from Niter\u00f3i, she was reportedly conscious for the first few days, according to drone footage, but rescuers failed to evacuate her on time.<\/p>\n

The accident occurred on Saturday, June 21, around 6:30 AM<\/b> local time when she was walking in the Cemara Nunggal area<\/b> en route to the summit located on \u00a0Lombok Island\u00a0.<\/p>\n

According to the \u00a0Gunung Rinjani National Park\u00a0, the Brazilian fell from a cliff that bordered the path along the volcano’s crater while part of a group of hikers.<\/p>\n

Group members described the ascent conditions as extremely difficult. One group member explained to the authorities, according to BBC<\/i>, that \u201cthe climb was really tough\u201d and that \u201cit was very cold; it was really hard.\u201d Another member detailed that at the time of the accident, Marins<\/b> was at the back of the group walking with her guide.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very early, before dawn, in poor visibility conditions<\/b>, with only a simple flashlight to illuminate the terrain that was difficult and slippery,\u201d recounted a fellow hiker, as reported by People<\/i>.<\/p>\n

The \u00a0rescue operations\u00a0 faced significant challenges due to extreme terrain and adverse weather conditions. <\/p>\n

\u201cAfter observation, two large overhangs were found before reaching the victim, making it impossible to set up an anchor. The rescue team had to climb to reach the victim,\u201d the park authorities detailed. The \u00a0thick fog\u00a0 reduced visibility and affected the use of thermal drones, further complicating evacuation efforts.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Brazilian government extends its condolences to the family and friends of the Brazilian tourist for the immense loss in this tragic accident,\u201d expressed the Brazilian Foreign Ministry in a statement.<\/p>\n

Mount Rinjani, towering at over 3,700 meters, is the \u00a0second-highest volcano in Indonesia\u00a0 and a popular hiking destination for international tourists. The volcano has a history of \u00a0fatal accidents\u00a0, including the death of a Portuguese tourist in 2022 after falling from a cliff at the summit and the death of a Malaysian hiker earlier this year during a climb.<\/p>\n
