The details that have emerged provide insight into how an aircraft designed to leave no trace operates.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- BREAK 1 --><\/p>\n<p>The mission, dubbed <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DODResponse\/status\/1936799099572916400\/photo\/1\"><em>Operation Midnight Hammer<\/em><\/a>, was executed under direct orders from the U.S. President. There are only two crew members aboard, in a cockpit that\u2014although more spacious than others\u2014is not designed for comfort. <strong>They wear suits, helmets, and oxygen masks<\/strong> and sit in ejection seats that have been described as \u201cremarkably uncomfortable\u201d by those who have flown in them.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- BREAK 6 --> <\/p>\n<p>Rest periods are accounted for: there are moments when one can pilot while the other sleeps. <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/us-bombs-iran-closer-look-b-2-bomber-used-strikes-2088984\" target=\"_blank\">Naveed Jamali<\/a>, a journalist and veteran who witnessed one of the training exercises, explained that pilots must complete simulations lasting up to 24 hours to be authorized for participation. The aircraft is equipped with a toilet, but lacks a full bathroom.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- BREAK 7 --><\/p>\n<h2>Four Key Reasons<\/h2>\n<p>During a visit to Whiteman Air Force Base, the same journalist interviewed one of the unit&#8217;s leaders. When asked what makes the B-2 unique, the answer was clear: \u201c<strong>range, payload, precision, and stealth<\/strong>.\u201d This combination, they claimed, is not offered by any other aircraft in the world, making it a critical tool for such operations.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- BREAK 8 --><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-asset-summary article-asset-normal article-asset-center\">\n<div class=\"asset-content\">\n<p>Range, payload, precision, and stealth are the four qualities that make the B-2 a virtually unmatched bomber.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The B-2 can travel over <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.northropgrumman.com\/what-we-do\/aircraft\/b-2-stealth-bomber\/technical-details#:~:text=Range%3A%206%2C000%20nautical%20miles%20%28unrefueled%29%2010%2C000%20nautical%20miles%20with%20one%20refueling\" target=\"_blank\">9,600 kilometers without refueling<\/a>. It can carry up to 20 tons of ordinance\u2014conventional or nuclear\u2014and is designed to evade even the most advanced air defense systems. Including total program expenses\u2014development, maintenance, training, and infrastructure\u2014the figure rose to about $2.13 billion per aircraft by the late 1990s, according to the <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170322100929\/https:\/\/www.gpo.gov\/fdsys\/pkg\/GAOREPORTS-NSIAD-97-181\/pdf\/GAOREPORTS-NSIAD-97-181.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- BREAK 10 --><\/p>\n<p>The project&#8217;s origins trace back to <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www1.udel.edu\/htr\/American\/Texts\/b-1.html\" target=\"_blank\">the late 1970s<\/a>. Initially, <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uso.org\/stories\/253-inside-the-longest-bombing-run-ever#:~:text=Although%20the%20initial%20plans%20were%20to%20create%20a%20fleet%20of%20132%20bombers\" target=\"_blank\">132 units were planned<\/a>. Following the Cold War&#8217;s end and the dissolution of the USSR, that number was reduced. In 1992, President George H. W. Bush limited production to 20 operational units. The crash was due to a <strong>pressure sensor anomaly<\/strong>, according to <a rel=\"noopener, noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/sma.nasa.gov\/docs\/default-source\/safety-messages\/safetymessage-2009-01-01-usafb2mishap.pdf?sfvrsn=d3a91ef8_4%20%282%29\" target=\"_blank\">a report by the <em>Air Force Safety Center<\/em><\/a>.
