Two decades after the \u00a0viral chaos\u00a0 that altered the history of modern horror cinema, the \u00a0apocalypse\u00a0 has returned to screens with 28 Years Later<\/i> (*Exterminio 3* in Spanish), the third installment of the iconic franchise that began in 2002 with 28 Days Later<\/i>.<\/p>\n

However, beyond its plot, what is generating buzz in Hollywood is how filmmaker Danny Boyle<\/b> and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle<\/b> decided to film each sequence.<\/p>\n

Both utilized \u00a0iPhones\u00a0, specifically several models of the \u00a0iPhone 15 Pro\u00a0 and \u00a0Pro Max\u00a0, devices capable of recording video in \u00a04K\u00a0 with professional color profiles like \u00a0Apple ProRes\u00a0 and \u00a0log\u00a0.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs it is a horror film, we used it in the violent scenes to emphasize their impact. Now that 4K is available on all our phones, you just have to turn it on in the settings, and \u00a0you can achieve cinematic-quality recordings\u00a0. That’s why we wanted to use that technology,\u201d Boyle stated in an interview with *IndieWire*.<\/p>\n

Far from settling for a single device, the team constructed customized rigs holding multiple phones at the same time to capture scenes from various angles.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s easy-to-use technology. It’s a bit complicated to synchronize everything in post-production, but it\u2019s a marvel,\u201d he expressed.<\/p>\n

In some shots\u2014especially the more violent ones\u2014they employed up to \u00a020 iPhones simultaneously\u00a0, something that Danny Boyle<\/b> defined as \u201ca portable and economical version of the bullet time from The Matrix<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was amazing to be able to film in such remote locations in England and Scotland, without depending on a huge production crew. \u00a0It’s light, affordable, and allowed us to explore long-abandoned places\u00a0,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

Despite his enthusiasm for the Apple device, the filmmaker pointed out that the movie was not filmed exclusively with iPhones. Additionally, \u00a0Panasonic cameras, drones\u00a0, and other equipment were used to complement the cinematic look, especially in larger-scale scenes.<\/p>\n

\u201cSony is desperate for us to say: \u2018Don’t let everyone think it was filmed only with the iPhone.\u2019 But the iPhones played a key role, and that can\u2019t be denied,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n

The choice to film with low-budget digital cameras is not new to the saga. When 28 Days Later<\/i> premiered in 2002, it was revolutionary for its \u00a0documentary-like aesthetic\u00a0.<\/p>\n

The \u00a0grainy and unstable image\u00a0 distinguished it from typical zombie genre blockbusters, giving it an authenticity that made it a cult classic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was impactful and visceral. \u00a0We weren\u2019t imitating American action cinema, but in the end, we connected with its audience nonetheless\u00a0,\u201d recalled Danny Boyle<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Exterminio 3<\/i> thus joins a small yet significant group of films shot almost entirely with phones, such as Tangerine<\/i> (2015), Unsane<\/i> (2018), and High Flying Bird<\/i> (2019).<\/p>\n

The film continues the legacy of a \u00a0highly contagious fictional virus\u00a0 that devastated the UK and beyond. This time, the story is set \u00a028 years after\u00a0 the original outbreak.<\/p>\n

The few survivors live on a quarantined island off the British coast, but the apparent peace collapses when one of them breaks the rules and encounters a transformed world, altered by both the infected and the remaining humans.<\/p>\n
