For years, a group of researchers from \u00a0Washington State University\u00a0 has been in pursuit of a treasure equally captivating, yet far more elusive: \u00a0Egyptian blue\u00a0, the oldest known synthetic pigment. This remarkable hue was utilized by ancient Egyptian artists to decorate everything from alabaster bowls to coffins, ceramics, and murals. Despite its once widespread popularity\u2014including its continued use by the Romans\u2014the \u00a0recipe\u00a0 for this pigment was lost over time.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 1 --><\/p>\n<p>Until now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is Egyptian Blue?<\/strong> This is one of those mysteries that has intrigued archaeologists for decades. Egyptian blue is essentially a dye notable for two primary reasons. First, it is the \u00a0oldest known synthetic pigment\u00a0 still recognized today, dating back thousands of years. Second, its \u00a0blue shade\u00a0 allowed artists to use it as a substitute for much more expensive minerals such as \u00a0turquoise\u00a0 or \u00a0lapis lazuli\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 2 --><\/p>\n<p>Although we refer to it as &#8220;Egyptian blue&#8221; in general terms, the pigment was incredibly \u00a0heterogeneous\u00a0. Depending on where it was produced, how the material was processed, and the quality of its components, the color could range from gray to a deep blue or even a muted green. One of the factors influencing the pigment&#8217;s hue was the speed at which the mixture cooled.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 3 --><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-asset-image article-asset-normal article-asset-center\">\n<div class=\"asset-content\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>How ancient is it?<\/strong> Quite ancient. We know that Egyptian blue was in use as early as \u00a05,000 years ago\u00a0. In fact, the oldest known sample is a small alabaster bowl made around \u00a03250 BCE\u00a0. The pigment was employed in ceramics, sculptures, murals, and sarcophagi. To this day, these artifacts display the pigment\u2019s striking blue tone. It was also applied to various surfaces, including wood, stone, and cartonnage, a material similar to papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 4 --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Was it only the Egyptians who used it?<\/strong> Not at all. The color was so admired that Roman artisans incorporated it into their palette following the conquest of ancient Egypt. It was even used during the \u00a0Renaissance\u00a0. The \u00a0Smithsonian Institute\u00a0 noted that several years ago, it was discovered that the renowned artist \u00a0Raphael\u00a0 employed Egyptian blue in his fresco titled &#8221;\u00a0The Triumph of Galatea\u00a0,&#8221; created for the \u00a0Villa Farnesina\u00a0 in Rome during the early 16th century.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 5 --><\/p>\n<p>While Raphael\u2019s intention might have been to emulate the ancient Roman technique, Washington State University (WSU) specifies that by the Renaissance, the pigment&#8217;s formula had nearly vanished from memory. A research team from WSU has sought to rectify this, collaborating closely with the \u00a0Carnegie Museum\u00a0 of Natural History and the \u00a0Smithsonian Conservation Institute\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 6 --><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-asset article-asset-normal article-asset-center\">\n<div class=\"desvio-container\">\n<div class=\"desvio\">\n<div class=\"desvio-figure js-desvio-figure\">\n       <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ancient brew of Pharaohs\" width=\"375\" height=\"142\" src=\"https:\/\/teknomers.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1750524516_902_For-centuries-the-recipe-for-the-blue-pigment-used-by.jpeg\"\/>\n     <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>How did they accomplish this?<\/strong> Through trial and error. The team meticulously examined samples of the pigment and developed \u00a012 different recipes\u00a0 while experimenting with various raw materials and processing times. Their findings are detailed in a paper published in \u00a0NPJ Heritage Science\u00a0, outlining how they worked with mixtures of \u00a0silicon dioxide\u00a0, \u00a0copper\u00a0, \u00a0calcium\u00a0, and \u00a0sodium carbonate\u00a0. The primary ingredient is \u00a0cuprorivaite\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 7 --><\/p>\n<p>The process involved heating the mixture to \u00a01,000 degrees Celsius\u00a0 for varying times, between one and 11 hours, to replicate the conditions of ancient kilns. The resulting samples were then allowed to cool at different rates to study their pigments using microscopy and analysis techniques. They compared the results with actual artifacts from ancient Egypt.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 8 --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it that complicated?<\/strong> Beyond the materials and mixing techniques, the primary challenge for archaeologists has been replicating the exact shades that ancient Egyptian artisans once used. &#8220;One of the things we observed was that with small variations in the process, we obtained vastly different results,&#8221; states \u00a0John McCloy\u00a0, one of the study&#8217;s authors and the director of WSU&#8217;s School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. &#8220;There were artisans who made the pigment, transported it, and then used it elsewhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 9 --><\/p>\n<p>During their study, the researchers discovered that to achieve the \u00a0purest blue shade\u00a0, only half the components required for the blue color were necessary. &#8220;No matter what the rest contains, that&#8217;s what surprised us,&#8221; McCloy adds. &#8220;You can see that each particle contains numerous elements. It&#8217;s far from uniform.&#8221; In fact, WSU acknowledges that one of the conclusions reached by the experts is that the pigment is \u00a0surprisingly diverse\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 10 --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Did they achieve their goal?<\/strong> It appears so. In a recent statement, WSU revealed that after testing various formulas and closely examining the results, their team has successfully &#8220;recreated&#8221; the famed Egyptian blue. This achievement is not merely a matter of curiosity or an advancement in understanding ancient Egyptian art.
