This update marks \u00a0Apple&#8217;s biggest redesign\u00a0 of its operating system in years, offering a genuine glimpse into how the company will implement \u00a0local AI\u00a0 in its native applications.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 1 --> <\/p>\n<p>One of the most talked-about features is the new \u00a0anti-SPAM protection\u00a0. This system aims to rival some existing options, such as Google&#8217;s, but does so in a more aggressive and, arguably, less intelligent manner. In fact, I found it necessary to disable the feature after just a week of usage.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 2 --><\/p>\n<h2>How the Apple Filter Works<\/h2>\n<p>Within the Phone app on \u00a0iOS 26\u00a0, there are \u00a0new methods\u00a0 for filtering unknown numbers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Filter incoming calls\u00a0: Incoming calls from unknown numbers are filtered. The caller must identify themselves, and only then can we decide whether to answer.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Send all calls from unknown numbers to voicemail\u00a0.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Silence all incoming calls from unknown numbers\u00a0 automatically.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The second and third options are quite aggressive, although the second feature was available in previous iOS versions. The major innovation lies in how Apple employs AI for handling calls, with Siri responding instead of the user.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 3 --> <\/p>\n<h2>The First Day: The First Alert<\/h2>\n<p>Receiving \u00a0numerous calls\u00a0 each week can be overwhelming, particularly from delivery companies checking if I am home. Being a smartphone analyst at Xataka means I&#8217;m called by delivery services almost daily, especially from numbers not saved in my contacts.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 4 --><\/p>\n<p>I quickly realized that a delivery company was attempting to reach me, but the driver was not responding to Siri&#8217;s questions. I understood this by observing how this feature operates.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 5 --><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-asset-image article-asset-normal article-asset-center\">\n<div class=\"asset-content\">\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Filtro\" class=\"centro_sinmarco\" src=\"https:\/\/teknomers.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/It-took-me-less-than-a-week-to-disable-the.jpeg\"\/>\n      <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Thank You, Please Don\u2019t Hang Up<\/h2>\n<p>When an unknown number calls, Siri prompts the caller to identify themselves and provide a reason for the call. They don\u2019t need to be overly explicit; simply saying, &#8220;I&#8217;m Ricardo, it&#8217;s important,&#8221; suffices. However, there are two key issues.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 6 --> <\/p>\n<p>Firstly, the iPhone sends a \u00a0discreet notification\u00a0 when the filter is active, accompanied by a minimal vibration likely to go unnoticed. This is exactly what occurred for me, both with the delivery drivers and during a call from my health center. After Siri&#8217;s intervention, if the caller isn&#8217;t willing (or able) to respond immediately, waiting for 20 seconds before the phone rings is often too lengthy.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 8 --><\/p>\n<p>I could see how the delivery person hung up before I received the call, and upon asking him later, he remarked that he wasn\u2019t sure if it was some type of fraud.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 9 --><\/p>\n<h2>Normalizing Siri&#8217;s Reception<\/h2>\n<p>Getting used to the idea of Siri answering your calls will not be easy. It would require that nearly all Apple users enable this function, and that callers understand they need to engage with Siri when calling an iPhone.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 10 --> <\/p>\n<p>This feature also undermines the most crucial aspect of emergency calls: \u00a0immediacy\u00a0. If this is the case, Google employs its cloud-based AI to analyze where the number originates.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 12 --><\/p>\n<p>In instances where you&#8217;re unsure who is calling, pressing &#8220;filter&#8221; prompts Google Assistant to perform similar tasks as Apple: asking for the caller&#8217;s identity and reason for their call. This creates an infallible filter for commercial and fraudulent calls, while still keeping you updated about incoming calls.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 13 --><\/p>\n<p>As we progress with technology, it becomes increasingly clear that the balance between \u00a0user control\u00a0 and \u00a0AI assistance\u00a0 must be refined. With \u00a0iOS 26\u00a0, Apple offers a glimpse of what&#8217;s possible but also raises questions about the effectiveness of its features compared to competitors like Google.
