Switzerland has increasingly become a \u00a0preferred destination\u00a0 for Spaniards seeking new opportunities abroad. The country is renowned for its \u00a0high quality of life\u00a0 and \u00a0attractive salaries\u00a0. As per the latest records from the National Statistics Institute (INE), more than \u00a0136,000 Spaniards currently reside in Switzerland\u00a0. This migration is largely driven by the high youth unemployment rate in Spain, prompting many young individuals to consider a future overseas.<\/p>\n

The scarcity of job opportunities in Spain has led thousands to seek experience, economic independence, and a different reality. The key motivator for many remains financial: while the \u00a0average annual salary in Spain\u00a0 hovers around \u00a0\u20ac27,000\u00a0, in Switzerland, it is approximately \u00a0CHF 105,000\u00a0\u2014equivalent to around \u00a0\u20ac8,700 per month\u00a0.<\/p>\n

One notable example is \u00a0David Castillo (@dcastip)\u00a0, who moved to Switzerland nearly two years ago. The Seville native works as a \u00a0Healthcare Auxiliary Technician (TCAE)\u00a0, a position that can command up to \u00a0CHF 5,500\u00a0 (approximately \u00a0\u20ac5,800\u00a0) monthly, according to Castillo\u2014a significantly higher salary than what he earned in Spain.<\/p>\n

However, the high wages come with equally high costs. Adjusting to the \u00a0Swiss healthcare system\u00a0 has taken Castillo by surprise. Accustomed to Spain’s public health system, he was shocked by the prices he encountered for medications. \u201cI just got back from the pharmacy and was charged \u00a0\u20ac35 for a box of paracetamol\u00a0,\u201d he explains in a TikTok video.<\/p>\n

Castillo’s experience underscores the stark difference in healthcare costs: he paid \u00a0CHF 35 for a pack of 100 paracetamol tablets\u00a0, a striking contrast to Spanish pharmacies, where prices are substantially lower. This price is \u00a020 times the maximum regulated price\u00a0 for the same medication in Spain. In addition, Castillo had to visit a doctor, which cost him \u201c\u00a0over 200 euros for the consultation\u00a0,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n

Switzerland’s \u00a0healthcare system\u00a0 is characterized by a \u00a0mixed structure\u00a0 where public and private sectors intertwine under strict regulations. Everyone is mandated to purchase a \u00a0basic health insurance plan\u00a0, regardless of age or health status. Depending on the insurance selected, various levels of medical coverage apply. The basic insurance necessitates a monthly premium alongside a required \u00a0annual deductible of CHF 300\u00a0 (approximately \u00a0$312\u00a0). Additionally, patients may select higher deductibles, up to \u00a0CHF 2,500\u00a0 (about \u00a0$2,600\u00a0), which lowers monthly premiums but requires them to initially cover their first \u00a0CHF 2,500\u00a0 in medical expenses each year.<\/p>\n

For Castillo, his higher deductible insurance means he only starts receiving coverage after spending \u00a0CHF 2,000\u00a0. “Everyone is taken aback when they hear about these costs,” he remarks, \u201cbut honestly, \u00a0after spending \u20ac35 on paracetamol, I am content\u00a0 because the quality of life here enables such expenses.\u201d<\/p>\n

In essence, while the Swiss landscape offers opportunities and higher salaries, it also presents challenges, particularly in adapting to a high-cost living, especially regarding healthcare.
