I remember the anticipation in the moments leading up to it. We arrived hours early, but in Le Mans, there is an electric atmosphere filled with nervousness from the break of dawn. It’s the kind of anxiety that brings a contained smile, caught between excitement and fear.

I may not have been there 25 years ago , but I can imagine that the feelings were similar. The race of the year 2000 was not just a competition; it marked the dawn of a new millennium. Little did we know that it would usher in one of the most dominant eras in racing history .

This era was dominated by Audi—an era that began with a victory and transformed the very notion of what Le Mans could be. It all started with the scent of petrol and ended with the aroma of diesel.

The Golden Years of Audi at Le Mans

Although Audi clinched its first victory at Le Mans in 2000, the previous year served as a valuable trial run for the legendary endurance race. In 1999, BMW stood victorious as the last champion before the new millennium dawned. Nobody could have predicted that, in the following 18 editions , a single team would win 13 of them, with nine victories coming in a row.

When the year 2000 arrived, Audi returned with its R8, equipped with a 3.6-liter V8 engine . They had attempted to prove their mettle the previous year but made transmission adjustments for the upcoming race. From the outset, it became clear that the three Audi cars would face minimal rivalry. Teams like Courage, Oreca, DAMS, and Panoz simply could not compete with the Germans. The team, driven by Frank Biela, Tom Kristensen, and Emanuele Pirro, completed 368 laps .

Audi swept the podium, with their third unit also posting 368 laps. To understand their dominance, the fourth-place Courage C52, which had a Peugeot engine, only managed 344 laps . The gap was immense and would become more pronounced in the years to follow.

Between 2000 and 2008, Audi captured every single victory in the LMP900 and later LMP1 categories. Out of a possible 24 podiums, Audi claimed 19 with either the official team or a private team using one of their R8s.

The dominance was overwhelming, but after three years of reigning as the official team, Audi exited the racing scene, with their cars appearing on the grid through private teams. This pattern repeated itself between 2003 and 2005 .

However, everything changed in 2006 . Audi re-entered the top tier of Le Mans with a surprise: a diesel engine . They aimed to demonstrate that fuel efficiency could reign supreme. The strategy was straightforward—less consumption meant fewer pit stops, equating to more track time.

A Diesel Milestone

And it worked.

In 2006 , Audi entered the starting line of the 24 Hours of Le Mans with only two cars instead of three, allowing them to concentrate their efforts. They ended the race with a 1-3 finish , adding to their already impressive podium record between 2000 and 2008.

The vehicle was powered by a V12 twin-turbocharged engine generating a maximum of 659 HP . You see, this engine allowed the Audi R10 TDI to cover 26 kilometers further before needing to refuel compared to its predecessor.

This marked the first victory for a diesel car in Le Mans history, but it wouldn’t be the last. Audi repeated their triumph in 2007 and 2008 . However, competition intensified, particularly when Peugeot entered the race in 2007 with their own diesel engine.

Although Audi again dominated in 2007 , putting ten laps between themselves and Peugeot, the next year saw an even tighter battle, with both teams completing 381 laps .

The best was yet to come. In 2009 , Peugeot finally clinched a win, finishing six laps ahead of Audi. The subsequent year saw Audi achieve one of the most spectacular records in racing history.

In 2010 , Audi swept all three podium spots again without Peugeot on the grid. The dominance was so extreme that the first non-Audi LMP1 finished 26 laps behind.

Drivers Mike Rockenfeller, Timo Bernhard, and Romain Dumas completed 397 laps , matching the record previously set by the Porsche 917K in 1971 but under different conditions, as the circuit was longer in 2010. From that point on, Audi held the record for the total distance covered in Le Mans, achieving 5,410.713 km .

This record was set with the Audi R15 TDI Plus , boasting a 5.5-liter V10 TDI engine outputting 600 HP . It marked the return of Audi to a winning trajectory that lasted until 2014 , transitioning into hybrid powertrains along the way.

In the latter half of the previous decade, competitors like Porsche and Toyota overshadowed Audi, including a win by Fernando Alonso . Thus, the year 2014 marked the end of an era, closing the most glorious chapter in Audi’s history at Le Mans.

Photo | Audi

For more details, check out Xataka’s coverage.

General News – 2

The Unforgettable Moments of the 24 Hours of Le Mans In just a few hours, the 24 Hours of Le Mans will begin.
