On June 10, 2023, the \u00a0Congress of the Republic of Peru\u00a0 registered a formal proposal declaring the city of \u00a0Chiclayo as the \u2018Spiritual Cradle of Pope Le\u00f3n XIV\u2019\u00a0. This initiative, led by \u00a0Congresswoman Hilda Marleny Portero L\u00f3pez\u00a0 from the *Acci\u00f3n Popular* party, aims to acknowledge the significant contributions of \u00a0Robert Francis Prevost\u00a0, now Pope Le\u00f3n XIV, during his pastoral work in the, Di\u00f3cesis de Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023.<\/p>\n

This legislative proposal seeks to highlight and reevaluate the \u00a0deep spiritual connection\u00a0 between the pontiff and the people of \u00a0Lambayeque\u00a0. It envisions that the Executive, through the \u00a0Ministries of Culture (Mincul)\u00a0 and \u00a0Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur)\u00a0, will promote commemorative, academic, tourism, and educational activities in partnership with regional entities. One of the highlights includes the creation of the \u00a0\u201cTourist Route of the Paths of Pope Le\u00f3n XIV.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The proposal emphasizes the \u201csymbolic, pastoral, and spiritual value\u201d of Chiclayo as a place of formation and service for Prevost. The document quotes Pope Le\u00f3n XIV, stating, \u201c\u00a0Chiclayo taught me to be a pastor with the smell of the people\u00a0; there I learned that the Church is community, service, and dedication.\u201d This underlines the profound significance of his local journey.<\/p>\n

Portero L\u00f3pez, the initiative\u2019s author, remarked that \u201cthis recognition not only honors the history of the Pontiff but also elevates Chiclayo\u2019s role as a territory of faith and service in the history of the \u00a0universal Church\u00a0.\u201d The project highlights that this declaration offers opportunities to \u00a0strengthen regional identity\u00a0, boost religious tourism, and promote cultural activities, generating development and local pride.<\/p>\n

The text clarifies that the law is of a declarative nature, meaning it does not involve legal modifications or additional costs to the public treasury, respecting canonical law, cultural diversity, and current regulations. Furthermore, it stresses that promoting Chiclayo as a spiritual center aligns with international experiences that have elevated other cities to renowned religious tourism destinations, such as Wadowice in \u00a0Poland\u00a0 with \u00a0St. John Paul II\u00a0 and Buenos Aires with the \u201c\u00a0Path of Francis\u00a0.\u201d<\/p>\n

The project has been signed by Congress members Hilda Marleny Portero L\u00f3pez, Silvia Monteza Facho, Ra\u00fal Felipe Doroteo Carbajo, among others, and it has been submitted to the respective commission for evaluation and eventual debate.<\/p>\n

The \u201c\u00a0Tourist Route of Pope Le\u00f3n XIV\u00a0\u201d is a project initiated by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, in collaboration with \u00a0regional leaders from Lambayeque\u00a0. This route aims to establish northern Peru as a \u00a0destination for religious tourism\u00a0. It connects iconic sites from \u00a0Robert Prevost’s\u00a0 pastoral life, such as the \u00a0Chiclayo Cathedral\u00a0, the \u00a0Convent of San Agust\u00edn\u00a0 in Sa\u00f1a, the \u00a0Divine Child Sanctuary of Miracles\u00a0 in Ciudad Et\u00e9n, and the \u00a0Cross Sanctuary of Chalp\u00f3n\u00a0 in Motupe.<\/p>\n

Along this route, memories and testimonies of Prevost\u2019s evangelizing work in the region will be preserved, such as the crowning of the image of the Divine Child in Et\u00e9n. The circuit aims to recover the \u00a0spiritual and social impact\u00a0 left by the Pope, enhancing collective memory and fostering a sense of community among residents.<\/p>\n

Simultaneously, projects for the recovery and improvement of religious and cultural infrastructure will be developed through \u00a0Works for Taxes\u00a0 to strengthen tourism offerings, stimulate the economy, and create local jobs. Additionally, the plan will include a technical assessment of attractions conducted by \u00a0PromPer\u00fa\u00a0 and the \u00a0Vice Ministry of Tourism\u00a0, integrating the route with other festivities and emblematic destinations in Lambayeque. The proposal aspires to solidify the region as a pilgrimage site and a national reference in \u00a0religious tourism\u00a0.<\/p>\n
