This toxic metal is ubiquitous in our environment and can have serious health consequences.

The Ubiquity of Cadmium in Food

Element number 48, cadmium (Cd) is a bluish-white metal that is soft and highly malleable. It’s widely used in metallurgy and other related fields. Alarmingly, this metal was a major topic at the recent National Conference of URPS Liberal Doctors in France held on April 24, 2025, just before World Environment Day on June 5, 2025.

In a publication addressing this issue, the organization Safe Food Advocacy Europe recalled that Public Health France has issued several alerts since 2019. The National Agency for Food Safety, Environmental and Occupational Health (Anses) has also called for a reduction of cadmium levels in food to the lowest possible levels. According to a report from this agency, the issue has been known since at least 2011.

The fact is that cadmium is widely present in phosphate fertilizers that are massively used in agriculture throughout France. This heavy metal accumulates in the soil and can only exit through the plants, which easily absorb it through their roots. Consequently, cadmium is unfortunately ubiquitous in the food chain. It is notably found in green vegetables, but it also contaminates cereals, pasta, bread, potatoes, and other vegetables.

Credit: BitsAndSplits / iStock

What Are the Health Risks?

Unfortunately, cadmium can cause irreversible kidney damage that promotes the formation of kidney stones. Increased cancer risks, particularly for prostate and lung cancers, and bone fragility due to prolonged exposure, are also significant concerns. Notably, this exposure primarily occurs through oral ingestion (food) rather than through respiration, which plays a lesser role.

In a statement, doctors highlighted a well-documented public health emergency. They emphasized the necessity of protecting citizens through public action and political decision-making. Time will tell whether the country will move toward a ban on cadmium in agriculture. In the meantime, professionals are labeling this metal as a “public health plague,” strong words that should alert health officials in France.

General News – 2

Recently, liberal doctors have raised concerns regarding the presence of cadmium in our daily diet.
