As warmer weather arrives, so does the \u00a0tiger mosquito\u00a0, an invasive species that poses a significant public health risk. Since May 1, 2025, an intensified surveillance period has been in effect as this mosquito continues to establish itself across more regions of \u00a0metropolitan France\u00a0. With 84% of departments now reporting this pest’s presence, areas like Marne, Haute-Marne, and Haute-Sa\u00f4ne have recently become hotspots for the species.<\/p>\n

The \u00a0tiger mosquito\u00a0 (Aedes albopictus) is particularly notorious for its ability to transmit tropical diseases such as \u00a0Zika\u00a0, \u00a0dengue\u00a0, and \u00a0chikungunya\u00a0. The alert level is currently at its peak in 2025, especially with ongoing \u00a0chikungunya\u00a0 outbreaks in Mayotte and ongoing dengue cases in La R\u00e9union, which have reached thousands since the start of the year.<\/p>\n

Between May 1 and May 27, 2025, metropolitan France reported 341 imported cases of chikungunya and 247 imported cases of dengue. Currently, only one single case of Zika has been acknowledged in the \u00a0Provence-Alpes-C\u00f4te-d\u2019Azur\u00a0 region.<\/p>\n

The interactive map reveals that the presence of the tiger mosquito is still limited to a few municipalities in northern France, despite a broader influence over several departments. In contrast, the mosquito is prevalent along the Mediterranean coast, as well as in the Atlantic coastline areas of \u00a0Gironde\u00a0, \u00a0Landes\u00a0, and \u00a0Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Atlantiques\u00a0. The species is extremely widespread in \u00a0Occitanie\u00a0 and the \u00a0Lyon region\u00a0.<\/p>\n

According to the Ministry of Health, the following departments have over 40% of their municipalities colonized by the tiger mosquito: \u00a0Haute-Corse\u00a0, \u00a0Corse du Sud\u00a0, \u00a0Alpes-Maritimes\u00a0, \u00a0Var\u00a0, \u00a0Bouches-du-Rh\u00f4ne\u00a0, \u00a0Vaucluse\u00a0, \u00a0Gard\u00a0, \u00a0H\u00e9rault\u00a0, \u00a0Aude\u00a0, \u00a0Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Orientales\u00a0, \u00a0Ari\u00e8ge\u00a0, \u00a0Haute-Garonne\u00a0, \u00a0Tarn\u00a0, \u00a0Tarn-et-Garonne\u00a0, \u00a0Lot-et-Garonne\u00a0, \u00a0Gironde\u00a0, \u00a0Landes\u00a0, \u00a0Val-de-Marne\u00a0, \u00a0Essonne\u00a0, \u00a0Hauts-de-Seine\u00a0, and \u00a0Paris\u00a0.<\/p>\n
