The \u00a0pancreatic cancer\u00a0 is one of the deadliest forms of cancer in France. Although it is relatively rare, accounting for only \u00a01.8% of cancers\u00a0, it remains one of the most \u00a0relentless\u00a0. According to the latest reports from the National Cancer Institute (INCa) in 2024, the \u00a05-year survival rate\u00a0 does not exceed \u00a011%\u00a0. Alarmingly, the incidence rates are steadily rising in both men and women. Recent studies by the \u00a0World Health Organization (WHO)\u00a0 have noted a \u00a0real correlation\u00a0 between alcohol consumption and pancreatic cancer. There is a proportional increase in risk associated with alcohol consumption, with a \u00a036% higher risk\u00a0 for those consuming three pints a day (equivalent to six glasses). Unfortunately, pancreatic cancer is often diagnosed \u00a0too late\u00a0. Therefore, it is crucial to share the warning signs that may alert you.<\/p>\n

Pancreatic Cancer: A Growing Concern<\/h2>\n

There is no clear link between the \u00a0alcohol consumption\u00a0 of the French population and the annual increase in cancer cases. However, it is prudent to minimize excessive drinking. In 2023, there were \u00a015,991\u00a0 reported cases of pancreatic cancer (8,323 among men and 7,668 among women), with an estimated \u00a012,700 deaths\u00a0 across all genders due to this disease (INCa, 2024). This cancer results in a majority of fatalities. The high number of deaths can also be attributed to \u00a0late detection\u00a0. As noted on Cancer-Environnement.fr, “Diagnosed late, the prognosis for pancreatic cancer remains grim, with very high mortality rates. Pancreatic adenocarcinoma could become the \u00a0second leading cause of cancer mortality\u00a0 in the years 2030-2040\u00a0(Rahib, 2014).”<\/p>\n

Signs That Should Alert You to Pancreatic Cancer<\/h2>\n

An oncologist named \u00a0Anton Bilchik\u00a0 revealed to \u00a0Women’s Health\u00a0 \u00a010 symptoms\u00a0 that can be challenging to recognize but should alert you \u00a0immediately\u00a0. Among these symptoms are common occurrences, making them easy to overlook. First, \u00a0yellowing of the skin and eyes\u00a0 can indicate jaundice and is often recognized quickly; however, many might attribute it to other causes rather than pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n

Next, we have \u00a0severe back pain\u00a0. Many women experience back pain correlated with their menstrual cycle; however, as Dr. Bilchik states, “If the pain is constant (meaning it does not disappear once menstruation ends), it should be investigated.” Additionally, concerns may arise from \u00a0itchy skin\u00a0, notably around the abdomen, yet it can be generalized. Patients often mistake this for an allergy or mosquito bite, but the oncologist adds, “I have seen patients say, ‘It itches immensely at that spot,’ who when lifting their shirt, realize it has turned \u00a0yellow\u00a0.”<\/p>\n

Minor Changes Often Confused with Other Illnesses<\/h2>\n

Pancreatic cancer is insidious in that its symptoms often mirror conditions we may experience daily. For instance, \u00a0bloating\u00a0 after a large meal or prior to menstruation is common, yet it can also be an initial sign of \u00a0pancreatic cancer\u00a0. Similarly, \u00a0loss of appetite\u00a0 is frequent without cause and may escalate to noticeable weight loss. This is often subtle, referred to as a \u00a05% loss of body weight over six months to one year\u00a0.<\/p>\n

Among the additional signs, one may experience \u00a0strange urination and stool changes\u00a0. These can arise after consuming an atypical meal or simply from dehydration. Individuals might notice their urine is \u00a0darker than usual\u00a0, irrespective of fluid intake, while stools may appear lighter or even grayish. \u00a0Abdominal pain\u00a0 can also occur; however, its mild intensity often leads to oversight. Lastly, a general \u00a0physical malaise\u00a0 may be present even without any specific illness. For clarity, let\u2019s list the \u00a010 symptoms\u00a0 again:<\/p>\n
