The \u00a0French audiovisual landscape\u00a0 is preparing to undergo a significant transformation. During the night of June 5 to 6, 2025, the \u00a0Autorit\u00e9 de r\u00e9gulation de la communication audiovisuelle et num\u00e9rique\u00a0 (Arcom) will implement a major overhaul of the channel numbering system for \u00a0digital terrestrial television\u00a0 (TNT). This unprecedented shake-up will undoubtedly have consequences for \u00a0viewers\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n

To facilitate this new service plan, which follows the removal of \u00a0C8\u00a0 and \u00a0NRJ12\u00a0 last February, Arcom has announced a \u00a0temporary interruption\u00a0 of the signal around 1 AM. “There will indeed be a brief cut-off of the channels when the operation is launched, but it will last, in principle, only a few minutes,” a spokesperson for the regulatory authority confirmed to Le Parisien this week. \u00a0Viewers\u00a0 will thus encounter black screens or messages indicating no signal for a short period while the transition takes place.<\/p>\n\n

However, this mild disruption is only a minor inconvenience compared to the sweeping changes coming to the small screen. Beginning Friday morning, the French will have to familiarize themselves with a newly organized channel listing, the result of extensive restructuring efforts by the \u00a0regulatory authority\u00a0 over the past several months.<\/p>\n\n

Significant changes include the exit of a major channel and the introduction of a new one: \u00a0Canal+\u00a0 has decided to leave TNT, freeing up channel \u00a04\u00a0, while \u00a0T18\u00a0 will debut on channel \u00a018\u00a0. To compensate for Canal+’s departure, \u00a0France 4\u00a0 will logically take a channel corresponding to its name. The Parliamentary Channel and \u00a0Public S\u00e9nat\u00a0 will take over channel \u00a08\u00a0 (formerly C8), and \u00a0Gulli\u00a0 will inherit channel \u00a012\u00a0 (previously NRJ12).<\/p>\n\n

Following this, a block of news channels will be reorganized: \u00a0BFMTV\u00a0 will move up to channel \u00a013\u00a0, followed by \u00a0CNews\u00a0 on channel \u00a014\u00a0, \u00a0LCI\u00a0 on channel \u00a015\u00a0, and \u00a0France Info\u00a0 on channel \u00a016\u00a0. After \u00a0CStar\u00a0, which retains channel \u00a017\u00a0, the new \u00a0T18\u00a0 will soon arrive, followed by \u00a0Novo 19\u00a0, also brand new, expected to debut at the start of the school year on channel \u00a019\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n

The arrival of a prominent news hub at the heart of TNT (from BFMTV on channel 13 to France Info on channel 16) is noteworthy. While these modifications may seem cosmetic, they represent deeper stakes and fierce competition among various actors in the \u00a0French audiovisual landscape\u00a0. Each channel’s position is crucial; the lower the number, the greater the chance of being viewed by \u00a0French audiences\u00a0. This is a significant factor given the ongoing decline in linear television consumption due to competition from \u00a0streaming platforms\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n

Recognizing the implications of this “big bang,” Arcom has allocated almost \u00a0one million euros\u00a0 to a comprehensive awareness campaign aimed at ensuring that \u00a0viewers\u00a0 navigate this revolution with as little confusion as possible. The pressing question is whether audiences will embrace this new arrangement or take the opportunity to switch permanently to alternative viewing options.<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n
