As NATO soldiers from 17 countries engage in the \u00a0Baltic Operations\u00a0 naval exercise, their training will take place in, on, and above the \u00a0Baltic Sea\u00a0 until mid-June. The departure of warships from Warnem\u00fcnde has attracted many spectators.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n\n

For the first time, Rostock serves as the launch point for one of NATO’s largest naval exercises:<\/a> Approximately \u00a050 warships\u00a0, \u00a025 aircraft\u00a0, and around \u00a09,000 soldiers\u00a0 are participating in \u00a0“Baltic Operations” (BALTOPS)\u00a0. This year’s exercise, which has been ongoing since 1971, aims to unite forces from 17 NATO and partner nations to enhance their collaboration in maritime operations, including \u00a0submarine warfare\u00a0, \u00a0mine clearance\u00a0, and \u00a0air defense\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n

Coordination by the “Commander Task Force Baltic”<\/h2>\n\n

The exercise is coordinated by the stationed “Commander Task Force Baltic” in Rostock<\/a>. The United States is taking overarching command of the operation. \u00a0Vice Admiral Jeffrey T. Anderson\u00a0 of the US Navy describes BALTOPS as a “cornerstone” for transatlantic security.<\/p>\n\n

Restrictions for Civilian Shipping Traffic<\/h2>\n\n

During the training period leading up to \u00a0June 20\u00a0, there will be restrictions on maritime activities, including close coastal areas. The navy asks recreational boaters, sailors, anglers, and kayakers to maintain a safe distance from military vessels. This request aims to avoid dangerous situations arising from proximity to military ships. The navy has indicated an “increased volume of shipping” in the Rostock area.<\/p>\n\n
