A \u00a0tragic accident\u00a0 occurred on Tuesday, June 3, in the Place de la R\u00e9publique in Bergerac. While firefighters from Bergerac, part of the departmental intervention group for perilous environments (Grimp), were conducting an exercise in an underground parking facility, Chief Warrant Officer \u00a0Mickael Brezault\u00a0, aged 53, fell approximately \u00a010 meters\u00a0 through open grilles. According to initial reports, the incident happened during the debriefing session.<\/p>\n

At around \u00a010:30 AM\u00a0, police officers, emergency medical services (SMUR), and other firefighting teams rushed to the scene. The resuscitation attempts by rescue personnel were sadly unsuccessful. “This is a very standard exercise,” stated Alain Rivi\u00e8re, the \u00a0General Controller and Director of the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis24)\u00a0. “It involves a rescue operation in excavation.”<\/p>\n

The professional firefighter was described as \u201c\u00a0particularly seasoned\u00a0\u201d and was responsible for the operation. His colleagues are extremely shaken. “We will initiate our \u00a0psychological support unit\u00a0 this afternoon with our expert psychologist to assist the firefighters in Bergerac,” Alain Rivi\u00e8re added. Mickael Brezault was married and the father of a 15-year-old child. He was awarded the \u00a0Interior Security Medal\u00a0 with the \u201cSapeurs-Pompiers\u201d silver clasp in October 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis sudden and terrible tragedy deeply affects all the men and women in our corps,\u201d Sdis24 stated in a publication on Facebook. \u201cIt leaves the memory of a dedicated firefighter who practiced his profession with \u00a0passion and commitment\u00a0.\u201d Jean-Paul Bosland, President of the National Federation of Firefighters of France, also expressed support for Brezault’s family. \u201cI think of the terrible pain of his family, his loved ones, and colleagues,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Bruno Retailleau, the Minister of the Interior, also paid tribute to the Chief Warrant Officer. \u201cI offer my full support and compassion to his wife, his 16-year-old son, and all the firefighters in Dordogne. The civil security community is in mourning due to this tragedy. I stand with them,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n
